than they seem.âââ
âAnd two of them are missing,â Sally added.
âLeah wouldnât have taken them,â Bryce said quickly.
âNo?â Adam said. âTwo of them have obviously been removed. And you did say you hardly knew her.â
âThe code seemed to indicate that the crystals were the most valuable things here,â Watch said.
âThen why didnât she take all of them?â Bryce asked.
âIt would be hard enough for her to hike with even two of them on her,â Watch said. âI think she took as many as she could carry.â
Cindy gestured to the other treasure. âBut there are so many gems here, so much goldâwhy fool with the crystals? I mean, we donât even know what they can do.â
âBut Iâm betting Leah does,â Adam said. âHer father told her more than we know.â He paused, âIs that possible, Bryce?â
Bryce was at a loss. âShe didnât tell me anything.â
âThen why do you keep defending her?â Sally asked.
âSheâs my cousin!â Bryce snapped. âFamily. Wouldnât you defend your family?â
âI would,â Watch said softly, even though his family was spread all over the country.
âWeâre not trying to pick on you,â Adam told Bryce. âWeâre just trying to figure out what to do next.â
âI say we take these two crystals,â Sally said.âAnd stuff our pockets with as many diamonds and emeralds and rubies as we can carry.â
âBut what about the monster out there?â Cindy asked.
Sally made a face. âHeâs probably been in here for thousands of years. Whatâs he going to spend all this wealth on?â
âNo,â Adam said. âWe know nothing about this creature, except that the treasure probably belongs to him.â
âI think itâs a her,â Watch corrected.
âIt doesnât matter,â Adam continued. âIf we take any of this stuff, it will be stealing.â
âYou cannot steal from a beast,â Sally complained. âThey have no constitutional rights.â
âCouldnât we just take a few emeralds?â Cindy asked Adam, apparently having a sudden change of heart. âIâve always loved emeralds, and there are so many of them.â
âI canât tell any of you what to do,â Adam said. âBut I feel itâs wrong. If there hadnât been a sleeping beast, I might have felt different. But now I feel like we are breaking and entering.â
âI wouldnât go that far,â Watch said, steppingcloser to the crystals. He peered at them for a moment before frowning. âThis is odd.â
âWhat?â Bryce asked.
âThese appear to be nothing more than quartz,â Watch said. âThe least valuable thing in this room. Yet theyâre placed here on a pedestal, and the code implied they are magical.â
âWe havenât had good luck in the past with magical devices,â Cindy warned.
âWe could take just one,â Sally said as she reached forward to pick one up.
âDonât!â Watch snapped, trying to stop her.
He was too late.
Sally already held the crystal in her hands.
She laughed at their concern. âItâs not like this is a weapon.â
But it must have been something important.
Behind them they heard the sleeping beast begin to stir.

A rhythmic change in the breathing of the beast was the only difference. It was no longer slow and deep but rough andâit actually soundedâgrumpy. From this they assumed it was waking up, but of course they still couldnât see it to be sure. Sally put down the crystal and wiped her hands on her pants.
âI was just looking at it,â she said quickly.
Watch hastened to the entryway of the treasure room and peered into the blackness. Adam came up at his side.
âWhatâs happening?â
