ÂpeopleâÂhumans, and monstersâÂyou are lost beings.â
âSpeaking for all the yôkai in L.A., go fuck yourself,â says Candy.
âWatch the profanity,â says Wells.
I go over to him.
âExactly what is Mr. Bones doing here?â
âHe was a yamabushi back in Japan. A lone mountain monk in Sennizawa. They called them Swamp Wizards. He has a deep background in the mystical arts. Heâs going to figure out how to make the Qomrama Om Ya work.â
âIâm supposed to be lab partners with this guy?â
The Vigil has the 8 Ball locked up in a secure clean room all by itself, suspended in a magnetic field. It floats in the air and changes shape as you walk around it.
âNot supposed to,â says Wells. âYou are. Itâs done and settled. Heâll figure out the Qomrama and youâll use it.â
âWhy donât you clue me in on these things from time to time so I know what to expect?â
Wells pushes the cooler against the wall with the toe of his highly polished shoe.
âFine. Hereâs your clue for today. I want you to write down everything that happened before the man you brought in died and everything you saw and heard when you went inside his head. Make sure Ishiro Shonin gets a copy and so do I.â
âNow Iâm your secretary.â
âFor the kind of money weâre paying you, youâre whatever I need. Today you werenât much of anything at all.â
âSpeaking of money, I still donât have my first check.â
Wells squares his shoulders.
âI wanted a man to question and you bring me back a horror show. This isnât a good time to complain to management about your salary.â
I look over at Candy. Sheâs leaning her elbows on the table.
âIâll write your report, but Iâm doing it at home.â
âI want it by nine A.M. â
âNoon, it is.â
Wells is tense. His heart rate is up a little. His pupils are narrow. I head over to Candy.
âIs there something else you have to say? Something youâre not telling me?â
âYes. Up your game, Stark. These might be the End Times. I donât want you half-Âassing your way through them.â
Itâs a good party-Âline statement, but itâs not what heâs thinking about. Thereâs something else.
âSure,â I say. Then to the Shonin, âSee you around the watercooler, King Tut.â
âDonât eat too much tonight, fatty. Salads are your friend.â
I grab my coat and Candy and I follow Wells outside. The Shonin stays behind and pours himself some tea.
âWhat an asshole,â she says.
âHeâs just trying to get under my skin. Sounds like heâs getting under yours.â
She shakes her head.
âMaybe. I donât feel well. Iâm going to see Allegra.â
I touch her cheek. Itâs cold, but Jades always run a little cool.
âYou feel a little colder than usual. Want me to come along?â
âIâll be fine. Iâll see you at home.â
âAt least let me take you through a shadow. Itâll take you forever on the street.â
âIâm fine,â she says. For a second she flashes her Jade face. Itâs almost subliminal, like she wasnât in control. âStop getting all over me.â
I say, âIâll see you at home.â
Candy doesnât say anything. Just walks away.
I remember that she still has my gun and I almost go after her. But I donât. Maybe some space is what she needs right now. Anyway, whateverâs wrong, Allegraâs clinic will fix her up.
I find a good shadow by the lab door and go through, coming out at home. Maximum Overdrive. The video store I run with a not-Âquite-Âdead man named Kasabian.
