Bastâs sentiment, unable to think of any other kind words.
âNot if I see you first,â Avery joked as their mother tapped his little brotherâs shoulder to let Sparrowhawk know it was time he got moving. She served Avery a look of scorn, but said nothing as she accompanied Sparrowhawk to his transport.
âHey, remember me?â Fallon waved a hand in front of Averyâs face to get his attention.
âOh ⦠hey, Fallon, whatâs up?â he queried, looking back towards his parents as they saw his brother onto his flight.
âNothing much.â She played along and in the spirit of the game she dropped her voice to a whisper. âI was just wondering when you were planning to tell everyone?â
âTell everyone what?â
âAbout us, of course.â
âAbout us!â Now Fallon had his attention. âWhat about us?â
â What about us? â The joy fell from her voice and Fallon realised that what had happened last night had been as she feared. âThen it was just the drink and you didnât really mean it?â
Avery pressed all ten of his fingertips into his skull. âFallon, did I miss something?â
Fallon took a breath to refrain from slapping his face. âDeny that you desired me last night?â
Averyâs jaw swung open at the question, dumbfounded by her presumption. Sure, heâd thought she looked a bit of all right, but a thought didnât constitute an affair and certainly not a commitment! And unless her psychic aptitude had improved somewhat of late, how could Fallon have known what he was thinking anyway? âI do most certainly deny it,â he retorted and realised he wasnât telling the whole truth. âBeware when your words conflict with what is in your heart.â En Noahâs warning ran through his mind and he cringed. This was not whathe meant, he assured himself on the quiet, when a stinging sharp slap to his left cheek brought him back to reality. âHey, wait a minute,â he called after Fallon as she stormed off. âWhat the hell was that for?â
âI wish you could remember,â Fallon called back to him. âIt was really beautiful.â On the verge of tears, she buried her face in her hands and hurried away.
âWhat the â¦?â Avery, who was never lost for words, held his cheek, amazed. Fallon seemed genuinely upset, so he thought heâd best wait before attempting to extract an explanation from her.
âWhat was that all about?â
Avery turned to find his mother, arms folded and glaring at him. âI have no idea.â He pleaded ignorance. âThe girl has gone insane!â He appealed to his father, Maelgwn, knowing heâd have a better chance of getting him on side.
âHas she now?â His mother wasnât convinced. âHave Sparrowhawk and Lirathea gone insane, too?â Tory queried him further, and he looked a little stumped by the question.
âI donât know what you mean?â
âI mean ⦠you donât seem to have many friends this morning.â
âIs that why Lirathea isnât here, because she doesnât want to see me?â Avery assumed that saying goodbye to Sparrowhawk in public would prove too difficult for their sister and that she was using him as an excuse not to be here.
âNow why would you wonder that, if youâve done naught to offend anyone?â Tory proffered.
âPerhaps they offended me?â Avery was rather disturbed at always being the first one accused whenever there was trouble.
Maelgwn kissed his wifeâs cheek to distract her from the interrogation and save his boy. âWhy donât you go home and see if you canât cheer Lirathea up?â he suggested, moving to take a firm hold of his son around the back of the neck. âIâll take Avery to lunch and weâll have a little chat .â
âAh! Good plan, father,â Avery
