together?â
âA dance recital? Iâd rather chew razor blades. Iâll just go up early. I can get a nap in.â
âGood. Then you wonât be so grumpy when I get there.â Traci leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.
âIâm not grumpy.â
A waiter appeared and quietly cleared his throat. âAre you ready to order?â
Kier looked up. âIâll have the filet Oscar, sheâll have the Caesar salad.â
âWith shrimp,â Traci added.
âAnything to drink?â
âJust a Coke. What do you want?â
âA chardonnay.â
âVery well,â the waiter said. âIâll be right back with your drinks.â He left.
Traci took his hand. âIâm sorry Iâm going to be late. Iâll make it up to you. We can eat a late dinner, go dancing, then whatever . . . Just donât pout. I hate it when you pout.â
âI donât pout.â
âWell, whatever it is youâre doing.â She looked out over the yard. âItâs snowing again. Itâs supposed to snow all weekend. Maybe weâll get snowed in. Wouldnât that be great? Snowed in at the Snowedââ
âYeah, I get it.â
She buttered another piece of croissant. âDo you know why these are so good? They brush them with egg before they bake them. It makes them shiny like that.â She took a bite. âI took a French cooking class once. Maybe Iâll cookyou a meal for our anniversary. Our anniversary is coming up.â
âOh?â
âYou forgot?â
He smiled. âNo. Iâve got a surprise for you.â
She smiled back. âI like surprises. Usually.â
âYouâll like this one.â
âI canât wait.â
âYouâll have to.â
âYouâre mean. I can see why your wife left you.â
âI left her.â
âLike I said, youâre mean.â
CHAPTER
Seven
Kier drove Traci back to her condo, then returned to the office. Tim Brey was waiting for him in the conference room. The table was covered with blue and white building plans.
âThere they are,â Brey said. âThe final plans for the Paradise development.â
âDid we get the permits?â
âNo, but itâs only a formality. We have the final zoning meeting tonight.â
âGood thing we own the committee,â Kier said. He looked over the plans, nodding approvingly. âI want to modify this for something around forty acres.â
Brey looked up. âWeâre getting the Allen property?â
âUnless he finds a million dollars in the next three weeks.â
Brey smiled. âWell done. You said you were going to end up with that piece.â
Kier lifted his case. âSet a meeting with the architects. Weâll go over it Monday afternoon.â
âDone. Let me know how the hearing goes tonight.â
Kier stopped. âI forgot about that. You better handle it.â
âBut . . .â Brey stopped himself.
âIs there a problem?â Kier raised an eyebrow.
Brey had plans with his wife, plans made weeks ago, but he knew better than to mention them. âNo problem.â
âGood man.â Kier patted his shoulder and walked out of the room.
Kier stopped by his office and grabbed his briefcase and a bottle of water. âIâm out of here,â he said to Linda.
âBe careful out there. I checked the weather report. Park City is expecting a blizzard. They say that they could get two to three feet of snow tonight.â
âWhen does it hit?â
âLater this afternoon, probably after rush hour. Do you need anything?â
âCall Lincoln, tell him to prepare the paperwork on the Allen property.â
âI will. Have a good weekend.â
âYou too.â
Kier walked out the back door to his car. He started his car, then turned on his stereo, which began to play a Michael
