Lacey put her elbows on the table as she held her coffee cup. She screwed up her eyebrows as she thought it through.
“You know you're right, Cole. It is a conflict of interest. I don't understand why none of us thought about this before. I should leave. But I feel bad, because Nate taught me almost everything I know.”
“And now it's time to move on,” Cole said almost patting himself on the back. “You need to leave before he fires you, it's the only way.”
“You know something, Cole, you're right.”
“Do it today. Strike while the iron is hot. If I know Nate, if he decides he's getting rid of you, he'd make sure all the other magazines and publishing houses wouldn't want you either.”
“Really? He'd seriously do that?”

“And don't forget dastardly and dangerous while we're doing the 'd's'.” Lacey laughed.

“I'll walk in. I need to get this all clear in my head. I have to plan what I'm saying and how I'm going to say it. This is hard.”
“Just remember all the things he said about me. None of them are true. He clearly has issues and who knows what he might do. You're right, Lacey, you need to get out of there before he can turn on you.”

Lacey got off the bus earlier than her normal stop for work. She was feeling nervous about facing Nate and wondered if she should just write her letter of resignation and pass it to his secretary to give to him. She knew full well he'd call her into his office anyway, so the best thing to do was make an appointment, face him straight away.
It was coming up on a year since Lacey joined the company. She liked her job, she liked the people she worked with, especially her editor in chief, Ali Russell. Lacey looked up to her and thought she was a great woman, she'd be sad not to be working under her guidance.
Maybe she was being hasty. She hadn't even met anyone on the team Cole had asked her to work with. Maybe she should have done that before saying yes. And what about pay? Was Cole going to match or better her current salary? Lacey realized that what she was really doing was focusing on all the practicalities. It was the only way to detract from the major problem. Nate. How was he going to react? How would he take it?
She typed out the letter of resignation first thing but throughout the day, had problems trying to tie Nate down to a time when he could see her. She wondered if he was being deliberately evasive but finally his secretary was able to pin Nate
