scoffed. âHeâs had so much mud in his ears itâs probably filled up his head.â
Tallkit unsheathed his claws, anger surging beneath his pelt. âThatâs not true!â
Barkkit pressed against him softly. âJust watch the ceremony,â he murmured.
Stagkit was leading his sisters into the hollow. Ryekitâs paws slipped and she slithered down the icy slope. Warm purrs rumbled around her as she straightened and shook out her soft gray fur.
âRye paw .â Heatherstar met her gaze. The new apprenticeâs eyes widened. âYour mentor will be Larksplash.â Ryepaw purred loudly as Larksplash stepped from among the moor runners and touched her head with her muzzle.
Heatherstar flicked her tail. âLarksplash, share your speed and sharp eyes with Ryepaw so that she too may become a warrior worthy of WindClan.â The WindClan leader turned to Doekit. âDoepaw,â she meowed. âYour mentor will be Aspenfall.â
Aspenfall pricked his ears, blinking, as though surprised.
Doepawâs pale brown pelt pricked excitedly. She puffed out her chest as Aspenfall crossed the hollow to greet her. âAspenfall,â Heatherstar meowed. âShare your courage and strength with Doepaw.â Aspenfall dipped his head and touched his nose to Doepawâs ear.
Behind them, Stagkit gazed at his Clanmates.
He must be trying to guess who his mentor will be. Tallkit held his breath, as excited as if it were his own apprentice ceremony.
âIt looks like poor old Stagkit gets Woollytail,â Shrewkit muttered.
âStagpaw,â Heatherstar began, âyour mentor will be Cloudrunner.â
Shrewkit gasped. âCloudrunner?â
âHeâs not a tunneler,â Barkkit breathed.
Tallkit felt a flash of relief for his former denmate. Stagpaw wonât have to train underground! Then guilt pricked him. He should be feeling sorry that Stagpaw would never be the noblest of warriors.
Heatherstar went on. âCloudrunner, share your hunting skill and agility with your apprentice so he may feed his Clans for many moons to come.â
Yowls of approval rose from the moor runners.
âStagpaw!â
âRyepaw!â
âDoepaw!â
On the rim of the hollow, Mistmouse and Hareflight twined their tails together, their eyes shining with pride.
âCloudrunner?â Woollytailâs mew rose above the cheers. Confusion clouded his yellow gaze.
Hickorynose narrowed his eyes. âWhy wasnât an apprentice given to a tunneler?â he demanded.
âWhatâs going on?â A mew sounded from the camp entrance. A gray she-cat stared at her Clanmates. Her pelt was dusted with soil.
Mistmouse turned. âHi, Plumclaw.â She shifted her paws uneasily as she faced her tunneling denmate. âIâm afraid you missed the naming ceremony.â
âDid Woollytail get his apprentice?â The she-catâs gaze flashed with hope.
Woollytail shook his head. âTheyâre training as moor runners.â
âAll of them?â Plumclawâs eyes widened.
Heatherstar stepped forward. âAspenfall, Cloudrunner, and Larksplash are going to mentor Mistmouseâs kits.â
Plumclaw stared at Mistmouse. âDonât you want any of them to follow in your paw steps?â
Mistmouse dropped her gaze. Hareflight pressed close to his mate. âWeâve decided that we want them all to be moor runners.â
âTunneling is dangerous work,â Mistmouse pointed out. âOur kits are good runners, like their father. Theyâll be better hunting the moors than the tunnels.â
Hickorynose took a step forward, his fur bristling. âBut we need more tunneler apprentices.â
Behind him, Sandgorse swished his tail. âAt least weâll have Tallkit in a few moons.â
Tallkitâs belly tightened.
âLucky little Wormkit,â Shrewkit teased.
Tallkit glared at him. âShut
