âThere wasnât one thing that went right. Miss Toni is going to kill us.â
âYouâre right about that,â Toni said, glaring at them. âI have never been so humiliated in my life.â
âNot even after City Feet made fun of you? âCause I thought that was more humiliating,â Liberty pointed out.
âMy own team, making a fool of me onstageby botching the choreography, running offstage, falling on their butts, and assaulting a judge was much worse,â their teacher said, scolding them. âI donât know what to do with you girls.â
âWe still have our duets,â Bria said. âWeâll do better, Miss Toni, we promise.â
Toni didnât look convinced, but she didnât look angry anymore either. Just sad and tired. She went back to her seat in the audience.
âI think we really disappointed her.â Scarlett sighed. âI feel bad.â She turned to Liberty and Rochelle. âThe only thing we can do is pull out a win in the Duets. Weâre counting on you guys.â Their monkey routine was fourth up in the category, and they had only a few minutes to change into their costumes.
Rochelle nodded. âIâll do my best banana split,â she said. âGet it? Split? Thatâs dance humor.â
Scarlett tried to smile but she had a sinking feeling the dayâs drama was far from over.
Chapter 7
Roll with It
âJust remember to keep the count,â Rochelle reminded Liberty as they warmed up and waited their turn backstage. âOne and roll and two and roll and three and â¦â
âRoll! I get it!â Liberty snapped. âLetâs just get this over with it.â She scratched at the fur on her monkey suit. âThis thing smells like itâs been in a litter box.
Eww
.â
â
Shhh
,â Scarlett hushed her. She pointed to Gracie, who was sniffling in the corner. âLetâs cut the kitty talk, okay? Someone is really upset.â
Liberty rolled her eyes. âIâm not the one who tore her costume, Big Sister Scoot.â
âIt was an accident,â Scarlett insisted. âAnd I pinned it back so you canât see her undies anymore.â But she doubted she could convince Gracie that the tear had been unintentional. Gracie refused to speak to Scarlett or even look in her direction. As far as Gracie was concerned, Scarlett did it on purpose to get even with her for ruining her leotard and tights. There was no convincing her otherwise.
âThe first duo is up,â Bria reported. âSweet Peaches Dance Company from Marietta, Georgia. Their dance is called âLion Queens.â â She peeked out through the curtains and saw two girls dressed in fiery orange leotards with yellow sequins. One girl was swinging from a vine across the stage.
âGreat,â replied Rochelle, âmore jungle acts. Just what we need to compete with our monkey routine.â
âTheyâre pretty fierce,â Bria added, observing the duetâs explosive acro moves. âOne of them just did an amazing back layout with a half twist!â
Rochelle shook her head. âI canât watch. Itâs only making me more depressed.â
âNext up,â the announcer said into the microphone, âwe have Explosion DC from Washington, DC, dancing a lyrical duet to âLet It Goâ from
Frozen
.â Two girls emerged onstage wearing silver wigs and white dresses covered with dangling icicles. âYou see that?â Bria pointed out to Anya. â
Thatâs
a costume. You donât hear them complaining about too many icicles, do you?â
Anya watched the girls pirouette across the stage. âAre they supposed to be abominable snowmen ⦠or porcupines? I canât tell,â she replied.
âNah, definitely chandeliers,â Rochelle piped up. âBut they are pretty good.â She watched as one girl did a lively series of
