demon!â he exclaimed.
He reached over and grabbed the mask off another kidâs face.
âAnd youâre no goblin!â he added. âWhat is this trickery? Theyâre just kids in disguise!â
âHalloween is not like it used to be,â Hoot explained to the warlock. âItâs all about candy and costumes.â
âCostumes?!â Warwick cried. âSo that boy warlock is just a boy? Why didnât you tell me that, you birdbrain? Letâs get him!â And with that, he headed straight into the town hall.
Moments after Warwick disappeared into the party, the Buddies arrived at the town hall. They hurried around the building until they found Deputy Sniffer standing guard.
âDeputy Sniffer, wake up!â Rosebud yelped. âWe need your help!â
âWhatâs the problem?â Sniffer asked with a yawn. âDid someone steal Budderballâs candy bag?â
âNo,â Zelda said. âThis is more serious than trick-or-treating.â
B-Dawg nodded. âThe Howlloween Hound has been released!â
Deputy Sniffer rolled his eyes. He assumed the puppies were playing a prank on him. Then Pip floated in front of him.
âWow, great ghost costume!â Sniffer said, impressed.
âItâs not a costume, Deputy Sniffer,â Zelda said. âHeâs a ghost.â
Deputy Sniffer raised his eyebrows. He clearly didnât believe Zelda. So, to prove it, Pip flew through the wall of the town hall and then came back.
Deputy Snifferâs ears stood on end. âWell, Iâll be a doggone dog!â he exclaimed in surprise.
âI knew your great grand-pappy, Deputy Tracker,â Pip told him. âHe did his best to save us. Now, we could really use your help.â
Just then, Sniffer looked up in alarm. âWould this Hound happen to be large and brown and racing toward us?â he asked.
The puppies turned around to look. The Hound was running right for them!
âOh, no!â Zelda yelped. âHeâs found us!â
âWhat do we do?â B-Dawg cried.
âThe long paw of the law will handle this intruder,â Sniffer said. âYou guys go.â
The Buddies, Zelda, and Pip took off. Deputy Sniffer bravely faced down the Howlloween Hound.
âStop, in the name of the law!â he ordered as the Hound reached him. âThose pups are under my protection.â
But the Hound just laughed evilly.
Then he began to howl. A green glow poured out of his mouth. It surrounded Snifferâand then turned him to stone!
At the party, Sheriff Dan was judging the costume contest.
When the kids arrived, Billy ran up to the sheriff. The boy still held the staff in his hand. âSheriff Dan,â he cried, âIâve got to talk to you!â
âWith you in a jiffy, Billy,â Sheriff Dan said. âGot to announce our winner.â He turned to the crowd. âAnd the first prize goes toâ¦Frank Carroll for Frankendude!â
The audience cheered loudly. But Frankendude looked confused.
Then he spotted Billy standing in front of the stage. Aha! Now he remembered why he was here.
Frankendude lunged toward Billy, trying to grab the staff. But Mrs. Carroll stepped in front of him with a camera.
âSay cheese!â she said.
The flash of the camera momentarily blinded Frankendudeâs green eyes. He tripped over his pumpkin foot and fell off the stage, landing on Warwick.
âGet off me, you buffoon!â Warwick cried.
âSheriff,â Billy said through the commotion. âItâs important!â
But Warwick had managed to pick himself up. âGive that staff to me, boy!â Warwick yelled. âIt belongs to meâWarwick, the greatest warlock of all time!â He grabbed the staff.
âHey!â Billy yelled. âI have to return that to Sheriff Dan!â
âNow, what have you done with my book?â Warwick demanded, seizing Billy by the
