For a split second she hesitated and then kept moving.
âHello, Alex,â she said as she came close.
âHey, Kelsey.â
âNo hello for me?â Keegan asked.
âI have no nothing for you,â she said coldly as she walked past.
Keegan nudged me in the side. âSay something,â he hissed.
âWhere are you going?â I asked.
She turned around. âLeamington Idol.â
âWe were just heading that way,â I said. âMind if we join you?â
âI donât mind if
you
join me,â she said and kept walking.
âCome on,â Keegan said to me. âThat was sort of an invitation.â
We trotted down the path and caught up to her.
âWhereâs the boyfriend?â Keegan asked.
She ignored him.
âWhere is Owen today?â I asked.
âHeâs meeting me at the talent tent later on.â
âGreat, so we have a little time to talk before he comes,â Keegan said.
âI have no time for you.â
âYou canât stay mad at me forever,â Keegan said.
âForever is a long time. I was thinking no more than fifty years.â She started walking away again.
âThatâs encouraging,â Keegan whispered to me.
âHow is that encouraging?â
âLast week she told me it would a hundred years before sheâd talk to be again. At this rate sheâll be talking to me in no time!â Keegan said. âcome on!â
He went after her, and I hurried to catch up to him.
âSay something else to her,â Keegan hissed.
Something else...what did he want me to say?
âKelsey!â I called out, and she turned around yet again.
âAre you coming to the tomato toss tomorrow?â I asked.
âIâm not sure. Depends how things go in the Miss Tomato Festival.â
âYeah, good luck with that.â
âShe wonât need luck to win,â Keegan said. Her face softened. She looked like shewas almost going to smile, but she stopped herself.
âWeâre running the tomato toss this year,â I said.
âYou are?â She sounded genuinely surprisedânot that I blamed her.
âYeah, we wanted to be more responsible,â I said.
âI can see you doing that,â she said. âBut other people feel that theyâre not responsible for anything they do,â she said, shooting darts at Keegan with her eyes.
âPeople change,â Keegan said.
âPeople, yes. You, no.â
Kelsey walked into the tent. Owen stood up and waved, and she went over to his table. She greeted him with a kiss, and I could almost feel Keegan shudder.
âI just canât believe sheâs with him,â he said. âBeauty and the tuba player.â
âAnd thereâs nothing you can do about it.â
âI should just walk over there and pop him one in the face!â Keegan said.
âYou canât just walk up to somebody inthe middle of the Leamington Idol contest and hit him. Do you know how much trouble youâd be in?â
âOkay, youâre probably right. Taking a shot at him there would be stupid.â
âTaking a shot at him anywhere would be stupid, but right there, right now, would be
incredibly
stupid, even by your standards.â
For a split second he looked like he was going to argue, but he didnât.
âOkay, that would be stupid, but Iâd love to have a chance to take him on, one-on-one, away from the crowd and witnesses.â
Then, just like he was listening to what had just been said, Owen stood up and walked out of the tent.
âI wonder where heâs going?â I asked.
âOnly one way to find out.â
Keegan started off at a trot, and I ran to catch up.
âWhat are you doing? You canât really be thinking about fighting him, can you?â
âJust come on.â
Again I followed. We circled the big tent and started down the path. It was darkeraway from thelights and,
