tell Ira the truth, but she kept quiet. Although he seemed very nice, and although she felt she could trust him, it was still too soon to know for certain. Ira was in a perfect position to tamper with someoneâs diving equipment. And what was he doing down at the beach just after Nancy had been attacked? Lucky coincidence, or something more sinister?
âAre you saying the two incidents are connected?â Nancy asked innocently.
âNo,â Ira answered, âI donât see how that could be. They were probably just tough kids, like Lori said. Kids who get their kicks out of terrorizing people.â Ira tightened his hands into fists. âAnd nothing gets me madder.â
Hoping Ira would drop his idea of calling in the police, Nancy said, âIâm sure that was it. They were just having âfun.âââ
But maybe not, she thought. Maybe they really were after her and Lori!
â¢Â â¢Â â¢
âIs there anyone,â Nancy asked Lori as they drove back to the sorority house, âwho might want to hurt youâfor any reason?â
Her wet blond hair brushed straight back off her face, Lori shook her head.
âNot that I know of. I think we were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.â Glancing quickly at Nancy, Lori said, âShould I ask you the same question? Anybody want to hurt you for any reason you know of?â
âNobody even knows me here,â Nancy answered.
âIt looked like you knew that guy Ira. Didnât you?â Lori asked.
âNot really. Susan and I met him just this morning at the diving facility,â Nancy answered.
âOh.â Lori parked her car back at the house. âThereâs random violence on every beach in theworld,â she said thoughtfully. âFriends of mine were on an empty beach in Thailandâon the other side of the globeâand got beat up terribly.â
Seeing how important it was for Lori to believe the attack was not meant specifically for them, Nancy didnât disagree.
She gingerly got out of the car, holding her aching head steady. Whatever dangerous thing Rina knew, Nancy thought, itâs possible that Lori knows it, too. Nancy glanced over at Lori. And if someone wanted Rina Charles dead, then maybe Lori Westerly would be the next victim!

O H, N ANCY, Iâ M so glad youâre okay!â Susan jumped up as Nancy entered her room. âIra called and told me what happened. How do you feel?â
Nancy touched her bruised jaw. âA little tender, but fine otherwise,â she said, and flopped down on her bed, without mentioning the dizziness and headache she also felt.
After Nancy described the surprise attack, Susan asked, âWhat do you think, Nan? Was this connected in any way to what we know?â
âThatâs the question Iâve been asking myself, too,â Nancy said, staring at one of Rinaâs remarkable underwater photographs. âIs LoriWesterly next on somebodyâs hit list? Or . . . ?â Nancy rolled onto her side to try to get more comfortable.
âOr what?â Susan asked.
âOr has someone already figured out that Iâm a detective, and what Iâm after?â
Susan looked frightened.
âLori believes that it was just random violence,â Nancy said. âThe kind that can happen anywhere.â
âIt can,â Susan agreed. âAnd I suppose thatâs the most likely answer.â Looking down at her friend, she said, âBut I bet you donât buy it.â
Nancy smiled up at her. âNot yet,â she said.
Susan said, âIâll be quiet now and let you get some rest.â But before she left the room, Susan added, âOh, just one more thing. When Ira called, he asked if you and I would like to go out Wednesday night with him and a friend of his. He said he felt bad that youâd gotten such an awful welcome to San Diegoâand thinks you
