next to her, but when I checked for a pulse it barely registered. Her neck was obviously broken. No one could live through that, right?
I stood up and turned around, looking for a blanket. I didn't know if she would survive this, but she was nude and it felt appropriate to cover her up. Really I just wanted it for my own selfish reasons, her body, nude and covered with blood was making me nervous and I couldn't think with her lying there, exposed, now twitching even more. I was used to death, I had seen too many dead bodies, but the body of a female, a female I had just been with was too much.
I found a basket of blankets next to the sofa and pulled one from the top. The sound of movement behind me startled me and I swung around, a small blanket clutched in my hand. Was she up? How is that possible? I didn’t see anything. I turned back around and grabbed bigger one from underneath.
Something slammed into me from behind, hard. I flailed back against the sofa. It was Red Dress. She wasn't big, but her arms were flailing. They were reaching and grabbing for me, so I couldn't get ahold of her. I managed to push her back and off of me and got a look at her face. It was horrible. Her skin was now a deathly gray, her eyes were vacant. They were glassy and her teeth were snapping as if she wanted to sink them into my flesh–just like the roommate. It took everything in me to hold her back, but still her nails scratched at me, her legs kicked and she pushed forward, teeth snapping at my face.
"Shit!" I yelled. I pushed with all my might and flung her off of me, her head hit the coffee table with a sickening crunch. She got right back up though, her head bobbing oddly on her neck as if it really was broken and she couldn't hold it upright. She slipped on the floor, her legs not able to hold her well, but she got right back up and came tearing at me again. Blood dripped down her face from her head wound, and the bites on her chest oozed in a horrific manner. None of that fazed her and she kept coming at me. She was intent on biting me. It must be from the infection. It must drive them crazy with fever or something and then make them want to bite so they'll transmit the disease.
It was the only explanation I could come up with. Or at least the only one I wanted to accept.
I kicked out with a front kick. I had to knock her out, get her incapacitated before she hurt me or herself. The kick didn't even slow her down, so I kicked her again, trying desperately to avoid her teeth. I heard the sickening snap of bone when my kick landed. I hadn't pulled it enough and it snapped her femur. She fell, but didn't cry out in pain. She just kept coming, walking on the broken leg, pulling herself on the one good leg toward me.
I backed up across the front room, but still she moved forward, those teeth snapping, a horrible keening coming from her throat. There was blood everywhere, running down her face, her lips pulled back revealing all of her perfectly white teeth. Her nude body, the body that I had just been touching, was contorted in a terrible lumbering position, almost folded in on itself, hunched over and gruesome, as she reached for me.
Loud banging began on the front door. The condo was all one big great room, so I could hear Martinez calling me through the door.
"Martinez!" I yelled as I stuck my booted foot out to stop Red Dress from coming any closer.
Martinez burst through the door with Lena and Charles at his back and they both stopped short, stunned looks on their faces.
" Madre de Dios ," Martinez breathed.
She was still snapping at me like an animal, her face pulled back in a grimace of pain as if she was unbelievably hungry. She had fallen to the floor now, her legs unable to hold her upright, yet she still pulled herself toward me with her arms. She tried to push herself up again, to get back to her feet, but she crumbled to the floor. I walked over to her and pushed her down with my booted foot, to keep her down. I
