into his shoulder. He growled at her, but she couldn’t release the pressure. Her body was shaking once more like a crazy person. Her arms tightened around his neck as he fingered her until she flumped weakly back against the table.
“Shit!” she swore. “Damn.”
“More?” Degan questioned.
“Oh damn! Are you trying to kill me?” She laughed.
“Maybe we should move this to my room?”
“I can’t just stay,” she whispered.
Mika couldn’t open her eyes it took too much energy. “I have to work tomorrow.”
“Why not?”
“Like I said, I have work tomorrow.” Mika tried sitting up, but she couldn’t. Her body betrayed her sending her slumping back to the table. Her traitorous pussy clenched at the thought of Degan doing anything to her and she moaned.
When Degan pulled her from the table and cradled her into his body in the booth, Mika didn’t complain. He held her carefully. Tears burned her eyes.
“I could call your job and take care of things for you,” he offered. “Or I could come home with you. I am a man of my word, after all.”
She panicked. “You can’t go home with me!” She jerked to a sitting position in his lap. “You can’t.”
“What’s the matter?”
“My house is like the rest of my life,” Mika admitted shyly. She climbed from his lap, reached for her shoes and walked to her seat. She put her shoes on in silence. When she looked up, Degan was staring at her with an unreadable expression.
He nodded at her and stood up. “Did you drive here?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll let you go home now,” he whispered. Digging into his pocket, he removed his wallet and dropped the credit card onto the table. Mika on the other hand was fixing her hair and clothes. She looked at him feeling a horrible sense of guilt.
“I’m not running again,” Mika spoke up. “I swear. I just—I need this job.”
“Was this your dream, Mika?”
“Of course not! I wanted to be a dancer in the Showgirls of Simora. I guess I focused too much on that and didn’t think I needed a backup. Now this is what I’m stuck doing because I’m too old for another audition. My body doesn’t want to do it anymore.”
“And does this job make you happy?”
“No—but I don’t have a choice. It puts food on the table and pays the bills. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. And you can’t just waltz in here and fix me. I’ve been broken too long.”
“And what if I want to try? Would you let me try?”
Mika looked away from his gaze boring a hole into her soul. “I don’t know how.”
She looked up when he gripped her shoulders. “Mika, I know this may offend you, but I have money, power all I need in this world, to be the richest man, is you. It’s always been you. But if you want to walk away, I did promise to let you. That is what I will do—that was the deal.”
He released her and opened the door.
Bowing her head, Mika walked by him. “Thanks for dinner.”
Chapter Six
The regulars at the diner were even more irritating than ever. No matter what they did, it drove her bonkers. She finally walked to the counter, removed her apron and placed it on the counter. She walked out the door shaking her head allowing it to slam behind her. As she wandered home, Degan was on her mind. He’d placed her on that table, eating away at her like she was a meal. In a flash, Mika had a deal made, and then broken with him. She regretted it. How much longer can I wallow away in Simora where everyone thinks of me as the town’s mascot?
She climbed the stairs to her apartment, locked the door behind her and flopped onto her bed. Mika couldn’t help thinking any decisions she made at that moment would affect her life forever. Ever since she saw Degan in high school she wanted him. Though she wasn’t sure what that meant—or the meaning of the feelings pulsating through her at the moment, she knew there was something there, but he didn’t so much as say one word to her.
