Marcus to Zoey and back to Marcus. âOkay, kids,â he said. âSpit it out. Whatâs on your minds?â
Zoey looked down at her lap. This whole thing was Marcusâs idea. No way was she going to be the one to speak up!
âWell, Dad . . . The thing is . . . Zoey and I are both mature. . . . Well, I am, and Zoey kind of is . . . .â
âIâm just as mature as you are!â Zoey protested.
âLetâs stipulate that youâre both mature,â Dad said to head off any argument. âSo . . .â
âSo, we think itâs time we meet this person youâre spending so much time with,â Marcus said. âI mean, weâre mature enough to know she might not be The One, or whatever, but it just seems strange youâve been seeing her so much without introducing us.â
Zoey expected Dad to say, âSure, Iâll invite her over this weekend!â but to her surprise, his brow furrowed and he looked nervous.
âI donât know,â he said. âIâm not sure if sheâs ready to meet you guys yet.â
âWe promise we wonât bite,â Zoey said.
Dad laughed. âShe knows that,â he said. âAnd I promise to talk to her about meeting you, okay?â
âOkay,â Zoey said.
But Marcus wasnât so easily satisfied. âWhen you say she isnât ready to meet us, is that because she doesnât like that you have kids?â he asked. âOr that she doesnât like kids at all?â
Zoey hadnât even thought of that. She couldnâtimagine her dad going out with anyone who didnât like kids!
Dad burst out laughing.
âMarcus, I promise youânothing could be further from the truth,â he said. âOnce you meet her, youâll understand.â Suddenly more serious, he said, âIâll talk to her. Itâll be as soon as she feels comfortable doing it. Hopefully, it wonât be too long now.â
Zoey wondered how long âtoo long nowâ would be. Marcus apparently wondered the same thing, because after dinner he came into her room and sat on the end of her bed.
âWasnât that the weirdest convo with Dad weâve ever had?â he asked.
âIf it wasnât the weirdest, it was definitely a contender for weirdest,â Zoey agreed.
âHeâs being so cryptic about the Mystery Lady,â Marcus complained. âââOnce you meet her, youâll understand.âââ
âI know, right?â Zoey exclaimed. âBut then he wonât say when we get to meet her!â
âWhich only makes me want to meet her even more,â Marcus said.
âMaybe thatâs the plan!â Zoey said. Then she thought about it. âNo, thatâs not Dadâs style.â
âNo, definitely not Dadâs style,â Marcus agreed.
âIâm more curious about her than ever,â Zoey said. â Soon canât come soon enough!â
âYouâll never guess what happened!â Zoey told Priti in industrial arts the next day.
âShould I try, or are you just going to tell me?â Priti asked.
âIâll just tell you because itâs too awesome to make you guess,â Zoey said. âDaphne Shaw is doing a pop-up store in a Manhattan department store for a new tween line, and she wants to feature one of my pieces, since I was one of her inspirations!â Zoey gasped for air after rattling off her good news in one breath.
âFor real?â Priti exclaimed.
âYep!â Zoey said, a big grin lighting her face. âBut I can hardly believe it!â
âThat is so awesome!â Priti said. âDo you, like, get to go to the opening and be photographed by paparazzi and all that stuff?â
âI donât know,â Zoey said. âI hadnât even thought about that kind of thing. I was just excited that she asked
