into the lane at
Rachel’s place was just ahead and he slowed to make the turn.  The lane was a
pretty little gravel road lined on one side with cottonwood trees that spread
their canopy over the road so thick that it was almost like driving through a
tunnel.  The barn had nearly a dozen stalls in it and a really nice tack room
and feed room.  She had even put a little room in one end of it where a person
could sit and watch t.v., make some lunch, drink a beer or just simply relax.
He enjoyed coming over to her place and hanging out.  They had kind of an on
again, off again romance which probably could be something more if either of
them would just make a move toward it.
He pulled up to the big door in
front of the barn, turned off the truck and got out.  He noticed Emily’s car
was parked out front, so she was already here.  That was good, he could get
Dusty shod and they could get a move on right away.  He walked through the big
door and turned into the sitting room expecting to find the two of them in
there.  The t.v. was on, but no one was inside.  It was some sort of show about
thoroughbred jumping.  He poured himself a cup of coffee from the pot that was
sitting on the counter beside the sink and glanced at the t.v. while he drank
it.  There was a AQHA magazine on the coffee table and he thumbed through it
for a few moments without really seeing anything.  He was just wasting time
while he waited on the girls.  He drained the cup, rinsed it out in the sink,
opened the door and stepped through.  He shut the door behind him and stepped
into the tack room.  They weren’t in their either.  They probably went up to
the house for something.  No big deal, he’d just get Dusty and tack that shoe
on him.  They would probably show up and be ready to go pretty quick.
He took up a halter and started
down the center aisle to Dusty’s stall.  The little Palomino gelding nickered
at him softly as he approached.  The gelding had a coloring of grey mixed with
brown on his rump that gave the appearance of needing to be dusted off, thus
the name Dusty.  He was a pretty good little gelding and Rachel spoiled him
rotten.  Dan was around enough that Dusty knew him pretty well and Dan rubbed
the extended nose.  “How ya doin’ Buddy?” he said as he opened the door and
slipped the halter on him and led him out to the trailer.
    He pulled his tools out,
trimmed Dusty’s hoof so that it was clean and flat for the shoe.  He put the
shoe in place and measured it.  It was the right size, but the heel needed
pinched in a little bit.  Dan took out his heavy hammer, placed the shoe in the
right position on the bumper of the old truck and smacked the heel of the shoe
several times with the large hammer.  He figured that the sound would catch the
girls’ attention and they’d know that he was there.  He picked up Dusty’s foot
and measured the shoe again, noted that it was properly shaped and began
nailing it into place.  In only a few minutes had a new shoe in place and the
hoof neatly trimmed around it.  He picked up the other three hooves and
examined the shoes to make certain that they were all set well and wouldn’t
work loose.
He looked toward the house and
barn and noticed that the girls still hadn’t made an appearance, so he loaded
Dusty in the trailer with Jewel and turned back toward the barn.  He thought
about catching Emily’s horse, but he wasn’t sure which one she was going to
ride.  It would probably be the little round-backed, blue roan, but he figured
that he better wait.  He took off his hat and scratched his head a little and
then wandered down along the center aisle toward the feed room at the other
end.  Just as he was approaching the feed room he heard something and paused.
The sound was coming from the
feed room.  It sounded like heavy breathing with some light moans and gasps.
They were the sounds of sex; he was sure of it.  He moved slowly toward the
door of the
