not,â Tomas said.
âSon,â Ravvi said in a warning tone. âNo need to be rude.â
âHeâs threatening to sell them to their death, and youâre concerned about his tone of voice?â Margo scoffed at her husband.
Jesse made a face at the baby. She giggled. âShh,â Jesse whispered. âThis isnât funny.â He couldnât help but smile, though.
âThis is none of our concern,â Ravvi said. âWhat the outsiders do, the laws they have or breakâ¦none of that has any place here. We of the Kin should only concern ourselves with Kin matters.â
âThat doesnât seem to be an option,â Parvel said. âWe are in your world now. You have to concern yourselves with us.â
He said it like a challenge, and Jesse realized he was right. Any chance they had of survival was with this family.
âThereâs no going back now,â Tomas said. âSo, Papa, Mama, what do we do with them?â
No answer. Parvel seemed to be staring Ravvi down, but Ravvi wouldnât look at him.
âWhatâs her name?â Jesse asked in the pause.
Jesse saw Rae roll her eyes.
âSofia,â Margo said.
âRight.â Jesse turned back to little Sofia. âYour life is a lot easier than ours, isnât it?â he whispered as the argument went on. She gurgled and spit up on him. âIâll consider that a yes.â
âAnd I agree with Tomas,â Ravvi said. âThis is not something we can decide alone. We must consult the rest of the Kin.â
âIsnât there another way?â Margo asked. âCanât we just let them go? Pretend they were never here?â
Tomas sighed. âMama, just because Sofia likes one of themâ¦.â He shook his head. Sofia giggled, recognizing her name.
âTheyâre clearly criminals,â Tomas continued.
âNo, weâre not,â Rae blurted. She shot Parvel a quick glance, then continued. âWeâre Youth Guard members.â
If they had been surrounded by the kingâs men, that would have been a death sentence. As it was, everyone in the room seemed to freeze, except Zacchai and Sofia. Suddenly, Tomas looked even angrier, Ravvi looked hard and distant, and Margo looked about to burst into tears.
Jesse wondered what it was about the Youth Guard that produced such a strong reaction.
âSee?â Rae said, pulling up her sleeve to reveal the symbol of Amarias tattooed into her skin, the mark of the Youth Guard. âAs protectors of this kingdom, we ask for your help.â
âWe donât owe them anything,â Tomas said, still speaking to his mother. âWe should turn them in as soon as possible.â
âNo,â Margo said, and when she straightened her shoulders and stood upright, Jesse was sure she would break through the roof of the wagon. âWe will do nothing of the kind.â She took a deep breath. âI, too, have a son.â
âYes, we know,â Rae said dryly. âHeâs very charming, especially holding a dagger.â
âI do not speak of Tomas, or Zacchai, though they are both dear to me.â Margoâs face became strong again. âI am speaking of Barnaby.â
Barnaby. Jesse knew that name. He was one of the four Youth Guard members they were searching for in the squad assigned to the swamps.
Ravvi stood from his bench. âHe left us of his own accord, Margo, against our specific orders.â
âYes, and it was wrong of him,â Margo said, âbut heâs just a boy still.â
âStop making excuses for him, Mama,â Tomas snapped.
âI am not making excuses,â Margo replied hotly. Jesse was glad he was the one holding Sofia, because her mother was gesturing wildly with every word she spoke. âRight or wrong, he is our son, and I will not give up on him.â
âHe gave up on us,â Tomas shouted back. âDid you ever think
