scouts!â Ben cheered.
âAnd thank goodness Cornwallis couldnât keep up!â Jen added.
âTarleton and Cornwallis both wrote letters to each other on January 16. Tarleton stated that he had missed Morgan but that he must be stopped, and Cornwallis said that he feared Morgan had too much of a head start for him to catch him.â
Ben jumped up. âWait a minute! The Battle of Cowpens was on January 17! I know âcause Grammy keeps talking and talking about how important that date is!â
âYouâre right. Neither man knew it, but both letters were written on the eve of one of the most critical battles of the war. Both letters were en route while the Battle of Cowpens was being fought,â Sal stated.
âWow!â Ben whispered, staring off into space.
âI told you history is exciting!â Amanda cheered.
âNow, Iâm going down to the river to take a swim!â Sal announced.
âWait, you need to finish the story,â Ben insisted.
âNot today!â Sal smiled as he motioned for Amanda to follow him.

Chapter 4
Is It Haunted?
From inside the house, Ben heard Grammy call for him to get ready and help her pack the car.
Ben looked at Jen. âGotta go! Donât let Sal and Amanda leave while Iâm gone. Iâll be back late tomorrow!â
âHow would you suggest I keep them here?â Jen asked.
âI donât know, but I need to hear the rest of the story!â Ben said as he started walking.
âWell, you could read it in a book or on the Internet you know,â Jen reminded him.
âYeah, but itâs not the same. They make it exciting!â Ben grinned as he headed toward the car. âSee you later,â he called back to Jen.

âHey, Cuz!â Sam said as Ben got out of the car. âWelcome to Cheraw!â
Grammy kissed Samâs mother, Melissa, and hugged Sam.
âWow, youâve grown since I last saw you,â Grammy smiled.
âYeah, and Iâm going to be a kid who was friends with John Birks Gillespieâthatâs Dizzy Gillespie, you knowâin the play. Dizzy grew up here in Cheraw during the 1920s. I get to wear a flat golf cap and knickers, Grammy!â Sam said excitedly.
âThatâs wonderful, darling! Canât wait!â Grammy squeezed him again, happy to be spending time with her daughter and grandson.
âWeâre shooting marbles in the scene, and I get to say some funny lines. Iâm going to surprise you!â Sam explained. Ben rolled his eyes but didnât say a word.
âMom, letâs go inside and get some tea and Iâll show you the program for tonight. Lots of my friends are in the play,â Melissa suggested.
âCâmon, Ben, letâs go. I want to show you a secret place!â Sam started down the street.
âWhere are we going?â Ben asked as he tried to catch up.
âYouâll see!â Sam replied.
He took off running, leaving Ben to wonder where in the world he was going.
âSlow down!â Ben yelled.
But Sam did not stop until he reached a very old two-story house that looked like no one had lived in it for years. He paused at the iron gate in the front yard and waited for Ben to catch up.
âI want to show you what my friend Paul and I discovered in there,â Sam said as he pointed to the second-story window. âPeople around town say itâs haunted. We did hear some noises when we were going up the stairs.â
âWhy didnât you go back with Paul?â Ben asked, suddenly feeling quite strange and nervous.
âWell, he got scared and wouldnât go back, but I knew you were brave like me. After all, we have the same Henderson blood flowing through our veins,â Sam smiled a quirky smile at his cousin.
âWho owns this house?â Ben asked. âIt says plainly âNO TRESSPASSINGâ!â
âThe owner died a few years ago.
