looked away. âI didnât think I would ever see you again,â she said. âHow did you find me?â
âA combination of Keely and a private investigator. Iâve had a guy watching your sisterâs house for every person who came and went. I tried calling your assistant, but she blew me off.â
She looked up at him in alarm. âDid you tell her you and I hadââ
âNo, but I was tempted,â he said, reining in his frustration from the last several days. âWhen were you going to tell me about the baby?â
Tina blinked. âIâI wasnât,â she said with a shrug.
Shock rushed through him. âYou what?â he nearly shouted.
Tina glanced around in alarm. âPlease keep your voice down. I donât want to draw attention. I came here to think.â
Zachâs stomach turned. âAre you saying youâre not keeping the baby?â
She looked at him in confusion. âWhat do you mean? Give the baby up for adoptionââ
âNo, I meant,â he said and stopped, his throat closing over his words. âI meant end the pregnancy.â
Shock widened her eyes. âAbsolutely not.â
Some small something inside him eased and he took a quick breath. âThat still doesnât explain why you werenât going to tell me.â
She gave a sigh of frustration. âIt was a one-night stand. It didnât seem fair to drag you into it.â
âItâs my child too,â he said in a deadly firm voice.
âYes, but itâs not just about the baby,â she said and lifted her hands. âDealing with who I am, who my family is, whatâs expected of me and my family. Not many men can handle that. You donât really even know me. Itâs not as if weâre in love. Being involved with the baby and me would turn your life upside down.â
âYou donât think it already has?â
Her lips parted in surprise, as if she had truly believed he wouldnât be interested in his own child. âIâm sorry,â she said softly. âI shouldnât have rushed to the assumption that you would only view this as a burden.â
âThereâs a difference between burden and responsibility,â he said.
She nodded. âThatâs very true. Iâm just not accustomed to dealing with men who know how to distinguish the two.â
âMaybe youâve been hanging around the wrong men,â he said.
Her lips lifted in amusement. âMaybe so.â
âDo you know what your plans are?â he asked. âAre you going to live in your country?â
Tina looked down at her hands folded in her lap and shook her head. âMy brother is going to freak out. He might have expected something like this from my younger sister, but never me. I know heâs in a difficult situation, but I just wish I could go away for a while. I need to get my head on straight about all this and doing that in Chantaine is going to be very, very difficult, if not impossible.â
âI have the perfect place if you need to think. My ranch,â he said.
She blinked at the recommendation. âYour ranch?â she echoed as if that possibility was last on her list.
âSure,â he said with a shrug. âItâs no palace, but most people who visit like it. Itâs quiet. You would be able to think. Plus,â he said, âit would give you an opportunity to get to know the father of your child better.â
She met his gaze and a glimmer of the night theyâd shared seemed to pass through her eyes. Licking her lips, she glanced away. Zach felt a surprising bolt of sexual awareness stab at him. Where the hell had that come from?
âWhat do you say?â he asked.
âI donât know,â she said. âI hadnât even considered this until this moment. I canât make an instant decision.â
âWhy not?â he asked. âYou have a passport.
