I feel like weâre missing something. Something obvious.â
âI could come into the club sometime this week.â
âI donât want to drag you away from yourââ he glanced at Nita ââbusiness. Why donât I bring it by Nitaâs place later this week, after Nitaâs father is feeling up to the company?â
âNita?â Connor asked.
âFine by me,â she said. âI wouldnât mind getting a peek at that map to see what all the fuss is about.â
âSettled then,â Gavin said, dropping his hat on his head. âIâll see you two later this week. Enjoy your lunch.â
When he was gone, Nita said, âWell now, arenât you Cattlemanâs Club men covert.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âHe doesnât want to drag you away from your business? Why doesnât he just say âassignmentâ? Thatâs what it is, right?â
âYou asked for help, and Iâm helping. Thatâs all there is to it.â
âUh-huh. Whatever you say.â
âTwo cheeseburgers and fries and two sodas,â Valerie said, unloading her tray onto the table. âCan I get you anything else?â
Nita shook her head. âNothing for me.â
âIâm good, too,â Connor said.
Valerie reached in her uniform pocket for their bill, but as she pulled it out, it slipped from her fingers and fluttered to the floor. âOops.â
As she bent over to get it, a gold, heart-shaped pendant suspended from a delicate chain slipped from inside her uniform. Etched on its face were two intricately intertwined roses.
âOh, my sister would love that,â Nita said.
Valerie set the bill on the table and looked at Nita questioningly.
She pointed to the pendant. âYour necklace. Her name is Rose. She likes anything with roses on it.â
âOh!â Valerie pressed a hand over it and slipped it back beneath her collar.
âDid you get it here in Royal?â Nita was always on the lookout for a birthday or Christmas gift.
âFamily heirloom.â She flashed them a forced smile. âYou two enjoy your lunch.â
âSheâs an odd one,â Nita said after Valerie was gone. âIâll bet sheâs hiding something. Some juicy secret.â
âWhat makes you say that?â
âEveryone has a secret. Something theyâve done or said or felt that they donât want anyone to know.â
âOh yeah,â Connor said, his interest piqued. âWhatâs yours?â
Nitaâs violet eyes sparkled with mischief. âWell, if I told you, it wouldnât be a secret, now would it?â
Okay, so he hadnât really expected her to just blurt out that sheâd done in Jonathan Devlin, especially after sheâd so vehemently denied it that morning. But a tidy little confession would have been convenient. Though he had a tough time imagining her killing anyone, she did seem to have a quick temper. If she felt her family was threatened, who knows what she might be capable of?
They ate in silence for a while, and he could tell by the glances she kept shooting his way, the quiet would be short-lived. Finally she said, âSo, tell me about yourself. Your brother says you used to be in the army.â
âRangers.â
âSounds exciting. Whyâd you quit?â
Talk about secrets. When heâd left the military, it wasnât exactly by choice. âJust wasnât for me anymore,â he told herâthe oversimplified version of the events that led to his leaving.
âWhat do you do now?â she asked, then added with a knowing smile. âBesides your Cattlemanâs Club missions.â
âMy father retired recently and I took his place at his engineering firm.â
âEngineering? Sounds boring.â
âSomeone has to do it,â he said, even though sheâd pretty much nailed it. Engineering bored him to
