mind.â
âPenelope!â But Eloise was grinning.
âI love my mother,â Penelope said.
âI know you do,â Eloise said, in a rather placating sort of voice.
âNo, I really do.â
The left corner of Eloiseâs mouth began to twitch. âI know you really do. Really.â
âItâs just thatââ
Eloise put up a hand. âYou donât need to say any more. I understand perfectly. IâOh! Good day, Mrs. Featherington!â
âEloise,â Portia said, bustling down the hall. âI didnât realize you were here.â
âIâm sneaky as always,â Eloise said. âCheeky, even.â
Portia gave her an indulgent smile. âI heard your brother is back in town.â
âYes, we are all overjoyed.â
âIâm sure you must be, especially your mother.â
âIndeed. She is beside herself. I believe she is drawing up a list right now.â
Portiaâs entire aspect perked up, as it did at the mention of anything that might be construed as gossip. âA list? What sort of list?â
âOh, you know, the same list she has made for all of her adult children. Prospective spouses and all that.â
âIt makes me wonder,â Penelope said in a dry voice, âwhat constitutes âall that.â â
âSometimes she includes one or two people who are hopelessly unsuitable so as to highlight the qualities of the real possibilities.â
Portia laughed. âPerhaps sheâll put you on Colinâs list, Penelope!â
Penelope didnât laugh. Neither did Eloise. Portia didnât seem to notice.
âWell, Iâd best be off,â Eloise said, clearing her throat to cover a moment that was awkward to two of the three people in the hall. âColin is expected for tea. Mother wants the entire family in attendance.â
âWill you all fit?â Penelope asked. Lady Bridgertonâs home was large, but the Bridgerton children, spouses, and grandchildren numbered twenty-one. It was a large brood, indeed.
âWeâre going to Bridgerton House,â Eloise explained. Her mother had moved out of the Bridgertonsâ official London residence after her eldest son had married. Anthony, who had been viscount since the age of eighteen, had told Violet thatshe neednât go, but she had insisted that he and his wife needed their privacy. As a result, Anthony and Kate lived with their three children in Bridgerton House, while Violet lived with her unmarried children (with the exception of Colin, who kept his own lodgings) just a few blocks away at 5 Bruton Street. After a year or so of unsuccessful attempts to name Lady Bridgertonâs new home, the family had taken to calling it simply Number Five.
âDo enjoy yourself,â Portia said. âI must go and find Felicity. We are late for an appointment at the modiste.â
Eloise watched Portia disappear up the stairs, then said to Penelope, âYour sister seems to spend a great deal of time at the modiste.â
Penelope shrugged. âFelicity is going mad with all the fittings, but sheâs Motherâs only hope for a truly grand match. Iâm afraid sheâs convinced that Felicity will catch a duke if sheâs wearing the right gown.â
âIsnât she practically engaged to Mr. Albansdale?â
âI imagine heâll make a formal offer next week. But until then, Mother is keeping her options open.â She rolled her eyes. âYouâd best warn your brother to keep his distance.â
âGregory?â Eloise asked in disbelief. âHeâs not even out of university.â
âColin.â
âColin?â Eloise exploded with laughter. âOh, thatâs rich.â
âThatâs what I told her, but you know how she is once she gets an idea in her head.â
Eloise chuckled. âRather like me, I imagine.â
âTenacious to the
