long.â
âReally?â Jane paused. âHow many years were you with David?â
âSeven.â
âAnd how many times did you do it in the past five years?â
Amy was silent.
âHow many?â
âUh,â she stammered. âI dunno. Maybe seven?â
âNot even close. In the first two years maybe .â
âDavid just wasnât that intoââ
â You . Iâm sorry to be so harsh about it, sweetie. But thatâs what it comes down to.â
Amy looked up briefly to see that Hannah was standing over her desk. âThe sooner youââ
âI gotta go,â Amy snapped and hung up the phone. She looked up at Hannah. âCan I help you?â
Hannah started down at her for a minute without speaking. She then produced a giant box of cookies, which she handed to Amy. âPeace offering?â
Amy took the box, screwing up her face as she read the package. âAlmond biscotti?â She looked back at Hannah. âFor what?â
âWell, for your shoe. For one.â
Amy cocked her head. âMy shoe?â
âWhat? Oh, nothing. Just forget about that. So, how was your weekend?â
âHorrendous,â said Amy, looking away. â She was in my apartment, you know. That woman. And David.â She shook her head. âThey took everything .â
âI know,â said Hannah, in the same nonchalant manner someone might acknowledge a crumb on a coffee table.
Amy narrowed her eyes. âWhat do you mean, you know ?â
âDavid told me.â Again, in the same irritatingly casual tone.
âYou spoke to David?â
âWell, I wasnât planning to talk to him, â said Hannah. âI was trying to have a conversation with Liz andââ
âWith Liz ? Liz French?â
âUh, yeah. Weâre, umâ¦weâre kind of friends,â Hannah looked away guiltily. âI mean, weâre not friends , friends. We just know each other. We both workedââ
âI donât think I want the details, thanks,â Amy said, looking away.
âLook, I wanted to tell you the other day. I just didnât know howââ
Amy shook her head. âI donât understand. Why didnât you say something.â And then the realization burned through her. âHoly shit, you knew . Didnât you? You knew there was someone else!â
âWell, yes. And no . I mean, I knew Liz was involved with someone . I just didnât figure out that it was David until just a few days ago.â She put up a hand, âAfter the wedding,â she offered, helpfully. It did not help.
Amy took a deep breath and tried to suppress the urge to scream. âHow long has it been going on?â
Hannah looked away. âYou donât want to know.â
âHow long?â
âOh, come on, Amy. What good is this going to do anyone?â
â How long !?â
âAbout six months.â
âWhat?â
âI said about sixââ
âI heard you. I just donât understand. How could it have gone on that long?â She slinked down into her chair. âRight under my nose.â
âIt wasnât serious all that time. I mean, of course they were sleeping together the whole time butâ¦â Hannah stopped talking for a while when Amy let out a noise not unlike a yelp. âYou know, sheâs also kind of into reptiles.â
âAs a food source,â Amy jabbed.
âSay what you will but itâs not her fault heâs with her. Surely you canât blame her for what happened. I mean, sheâs actually a really nice girl. Once you get to know her you might like herâ¦â
Amy stared at Hannah a few moments and then stood.
âWhere are you going?â asked Hannah.
âI am going to have a word with him,â said Amy, pushing around the side of her desk.
Hannah grabbed her by the shoulders. âYou canât do
