her, and she laughs. “I wouldn’t know about the characteristics of stalkers, but I’m slightly alarmed that you do.”
    “ Criminal Minds .”
Television. Of course. “And no, there’s no anniversary. I just wanted to see you. I couldn’t keep doing drive-bys like a creep. I needed to just man up and speak to you. And apologize for being a dick the last time you saw me. For not writing…”
“You really hurt my feelings back then,” she says quietly. “I just wanted to be your friend.”
“I know, and I’m sorry,” I sigh. “I just didn’t want you hanging around that place and waiting on me for…whatever. I don’t know. You just deserved a lot better than a friend like me.”
“How about you let me be the judge of my friends?” she asks.
    “Deal.”
“So, as you said, we don’t really know each other…at least not anymore,” she says, kicking off again on her swing.
“Well, I think I know you pretty well now,” I kick off, too. I haven’t been on a swing in years. It feels good…freeing almost. I feel kind of like a kid again.
“Not that girl anymore, Jay,” she reminds me in a firm tone.
I smile, liking the sound of my name rolling off her tongue. “You mentioned that.”
“So what do you say we start from the beginning?”
“Planning on breaking your fancy new car?”
“Ha ha. Very funny, Mr. Spencer.” She blushes when I wink at her. “Not that beginning.”
“You want to be pen pals again?”
“No,” she draws the word out like she’s talking to a child. To someone with her IQ, she probably feels like she’s talking to one. “How about you meet me for lunch on Saturday?”
My memory flashes back to the lunch we shared years ago, when we spend hours getting to know each other. It would be nice to have the opportunity to do that again. “I’d like that, and I’m off that day.”
“Me, too,” she smiles. “There’s a café around the corner. We could meet there? Or you can come here, and we can walk together?”
“Let’s meet here,” I nod in agreement. Meeting her here and walking together means we’ll get to spend more time together.
She stops her swing and stands up. “Well, Jay. It’s been fun, but I have a nine o’clock class tomorrow so I need to get some sleep.”
I rise from my swing, and we silently return to the parking lot. I take her hand again when we’re crossing the street, and just like the first time, a current runs straight through her hand to mine. I glance over to see if she’s noticed, but she’s looking away. This time, I don’t let go of her hand when we reach the other side; I don’t let go until we reach my bike, which she eyes with disdain.
“Don’t be a hater,” I tell her, giving her a nudge with my elbow.
She rolls her eyes. “We should exchange numbers…in case something comes up on Saturday.”
“Right,” I nod, rattling off my phone number. Her lip quirks up on one side when I give her the familiar area code. She types my number in her phone, and a moment later, mine buzzes in my pocket. I pull it out and see a text from the same area code. I program her number in my phone as “Sunshine.”
“I’ll see you Saturday at noon,” she tells me.
I look up at her russet colored eyes and smile. “It’s a date. I mean…” Shit, I give up . Sighing, I say, “Yeah, I’ll see you then.”
She laughs and leans in to give me an awkward hug. Well, her part isn’t awkward, but mine is. I don’t know what to do with my hands. I want to touch her, but I don’t feel like I should. I end up awkwardly patting her on the back. Why the hell can’t I just be normal around this girl?
“It was good to see you,” she says, backing away from me with a shy smile on her face. “Good night, Jay.”
“Good night, Kate.” I watch her walk up the stairs and wait until I see her disappear into her apartment before starting my bike and riding away.
I guess that could have gone worse…
