dish. Is it Serenity? Please let it be Serenity.”
“Not Serenity,” Jenna said sympathetically. “It’s me.” Jenna let that hang so she could absorb the shock on her friends’ faces.
“What? How did I not know this?” Elisa hated being the last one in the know. It was probably mean, but Jenna got a little satisfaction over having kept it a secret even if her motive was to keep it from Alec and not Elisa.
“I got the official offer this morning. You’re looking at the new director of training.”
Elisa and Carly both squealed and hopped out of the chairs to embrace Jenna from each side.
“Oh that’s so awesome,” Elisa said, squeezing Jenna a little tighter. “And not just for you. With Miss Stone Cold Overachiever gone, that takes some of the pressure off the rest of us mere mortals.”
Jenna laughed. If Elisa wasn’t such a good friend, her uncanny ability to make everything about her might be annoying.
When they sat back down, Carly seemed to be contemplating - or maybe scheming. “Do you think Alec would hire me back? I mean, I’m a single mom now and he doesn’t seem like the kind of person who would be supportive of that.”
“I don’t think even Alec is that much of an asshole,” Elisa responded.
Jenna was sure Alec would hire her again. “You’re a great project manager, Carly. You’re familiar with how we do things. Alec didn’t want you to leave in the first place. Of course he’d hire you back.” That might also tamp his anger. She knew how much he hated hiring new people, but Carly wasn’t new. She’d been on the team when Alec was still a project manager. They knew each other well. “You should go talk to him after lunch.”
“I think I will. Thanks.”
“Oh my God,” Elisa’s excitement echoed throughout the restaurant. “You got a promotion. You might be coming back. This is great. Things happen in threes. Maybe something great will happen to me next.”
“I have to get the job first,” Carly reminded Elisa, but she seemed a little giddy herself.
Elisa rested her chin in the palm of her hand, dreamily looking up at the decorative tile ceiling. “I’d settle for a hot night with a hot guy – maybe a couple of hot nights. I haven’t had sex since the last time the planets aligned.”
“Stop being dramatic.” Carly nudged her. “You’re unattached. Try getting laid when you have stretch marks and the baby to go along with them. Men don’t like single moms.”
“That’s not true. You just need to find the right guy,” Elisa said.
“I agree,” Jenna added. “There are plenty of good guys out there.”
Carly sighed. “I’d settle for a bad boy and just one night, at least for now.”
Jenna didn’t figure bad boys looking for just one night were in short supply. “What we need is a girl’s night out.” She’d been so stressed lately with the pending interview. Now she was anxious knowing she had to have the serious talk with Alec. A girl’s night might be just what the doctor ordered. “Are we still on for tonight?”
Carly nodded. “All I can do is dinner. My sister is picking up Abigail from daycare but is expecting me back before bedtime. Don’t let me drink tonight. No matter how horrible Alec is after I crawl into his office begging for your job.”
“Don’t beg,” Jenna suggested. Alec only liked begging in bed. And even then, he didn’t give in to it. “Walk in with confidence and own that job. That’s what’ll get you hired.”

“Jenna told you she took a new job?” Alec asked, wondering what else she revealed during her lunch date with Carly and Elisa.
She hadn’t been at his place last night, which stirred his anger. The only thing that had calmed him down was the late night emails sitting in his inbox from her. She’d obviously returned to work at some point, because aside from sex, work was the only thing that cooled her down.
Alec had avoided stopping by her cubicle because he didn’t want to
