phone from his ear and then gave Chips a conspiratorial wink. When he felt it was safe, he put the phone back up to his ear. His sister was still going off.
âAnd another thing,â she ranted. âIf I can invest in myselfâa good education, a good jobâand take care of myself, then why canât a brother? Iâm supposed to give him the bizness just becauseâ¦what? He looks aight?â
Keenan just smiled as he held the phone. It was an older brotherâs birth right to push his baby sisterâs easily accessible buttons.
âHumph. Please,â Keisha said. âIâd rather curl up in my bed with a bowl of popcorn and make it a Netflix night.â
âSounds like fun.â
âAnd what about you?â she challenged. âWhat makes you any different than me?â
She did have a point. âIâm not the one perched on a soapbox.â He removed his dinner from the microwave and grabbed a beer. But before he headed out of thekitchen, his eyes landed on the DVDs on top of the counter. If he needed some type of show about true love or romance, then maybe he had the perfect person on the phone.
âKeisha, do you watch any reality shows?â
âNow, you know I do.â Her tone instantly turned more cheerful. âI donât miss an episode of The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Rock of Love, Flava of Love â¦â
Keenan frowned. âAll right. I get the picture.â
âWhy do you ask?â
He huffed as he tucked a few DVDs under his arms. âNitara thinks itâs the way to go for next season. I have my doubts.â
Keisha squealed and Keenan almost dropped the phone. âOh, this is great. What are you going to do? Are you going to do something with millionaires? Can I be on the show?â
âCalm down. Calm down.â He chuckled. âI havenât agreed to anything yet.â
âYet?â she repeated and then squealed again. âWhen you say yet that means a yes is just around the corner.â
âSince when?â He set his plate and beer down on the coffee table and went to his sixty-inch flat-screen and DVD player.
âSince forever.â She laughed. âDo you need any help vetting the applicants?â
âDidnât you just say that you were giving up on men?â
âThat was so twenty minutes ago.â
Laughing, Keenan turned around and caught Chips devouring his dinner. âHey! Get away from there.â
Chips grabbed the chicken leg and took off running.
âScootâaw, man.â Keenan huffed at the sight of his nearly empty plate. Why on earth had he set his food down like that?
âWhat happened?â
âI donât want to talk about it.â He returned to the kitchen. Looked like it was going to be another night of sandwiches and chips.
âYou know that Iâm not the only woman that feels this way about this shortage of good men. My girl, JalilaG1000, is constantly talking about the real state of the black union on a weekly basis.â
âJalilaâwho?â
âOh, itâs this chick I subscribe to on YouTube. Sheâs hilarious. Whenever I watch her weekly vlog, I feel like Iâm sitting in church.â
Keenan laughed. âOookay.â
âNaw, Iâm serious. You should check her out. Itâs JalilaG1000.â
âYeah, Iâll put it on the top of my to-do list.â
Keisha instantly caught an attitude. âFine. Whatever. I was just trying to help you out.â
He put his foot in this time. âIâll check it out.â
âNaw, naw. Donât do me any favors.â
Frustrated, but also knowing just how long his sister could balance a chip on her shoulder, Keenan abandoned the contents for the sub he was making on the counter and left the kitchen. âIâll do it now,â he told her.
âWell, donât do it for me.â
âKeisha, Iâm two seconds from hanging this phone
