as your best friend?â
âSheâs not my best friend,â Hazel shot back, the vehemence in her voice surprising even her. âI inherited those guys.â
Sylvia nodded. âFrom Joy. What the hell was she doing with them?â
âI donât know,â Hazel admitted. âI wondered that myself.â
âWell, you need to move on, girlfriend,â Sylvia drawled. âThey are going nowhere fast.â
âI know that.â
âAndâ¦so? Whatâs stopping you? Are they blackmailing you or something?â
âYeah. Theyâre blackmailing me. Holding my pet goldfish hostage. Isnât that how everyone keeps their friends nowadays?â Hazel bantered.
Sylvia laughed. âYouâre spunky.â
âAnd witty,â Hazel added.
âI like that.â Sylvia laughed harder. âI knew you were the right person to drench with Diet Coke.â
âActually, I planned the whole thing,â Hazel continued, sensing she was on a roll. âItâs the next step in my plan to achieve world domination.â
âThe world is a very big place. Youâll need help.â Sylvia winked. âCome with meâyou can see how this half lives.â
Sylvia walked her out of the kitchen, waving her hand and saying a brisk âExcuse meâ to anyone who stood in their way. They headed into a hallway behind the living room, where she pointed to the nearest door.
âThatâs Mr. Pollinsâs study. Anything illegal goes in there.â Illegal? Like drugs? Hazel covered her shock with a quick nod.
Sylvia chuckled. âYouâll see. People wander in and out of the room all night.â
Hazel shook her head. âHow do you guys get away with all this?â
âWeâre very careful about cleaning up after ourselves, and the people who party with us know they wonât get invited back if theyâre careless.â
âRight.â Hazel glanced down and realized she had carried her cup of Amaretto out of the kitchen. âOh. Sorry!â she blurted.
Sylvia smiled kindly. âThatâs okay. Youâre new.â She took the cup from Hazelâs hand and sipped. âOur philosophy is basically maintain and donât leave a mess. Use your manners and donât cause problems and you can do pretty much anything you want here.â Sylvia stopped in front of another doorway on the hall. âThis is the guest bedroom.â She turned the knob and strode into the darkened room. âYou can probably guess what goes on in here.â
âHey! Occupied!â came a girlâs voice. Hazel heard the sound of another girl stifling a laugh. She did a double take and then squinted at the two figures entangled on the bed.
âCarolyn?â she blurted.
âOut!â Carolyn snapped. âHavenât you two ever heard of knocking?â
âCome on,â Sylvia said. She pulled Hazel out of the room, laughing as she slammed the door behind them.
âWait a minute,â Hazel said, confused. âIf that was Carolyn, is sheâ¦I mean, was thatââ
âWas Carolyn fooling around with another girl?â Sylvia finished. âYes. Carolyn is gay. Do you have a problem with that?â
âNo, not at all. I just didnâtââ
âGood. Itâs not information we spread around, because itâs none of anybodyâs business. You know what they say: what happens here stays here.â
âCool,â Hazel said, taking a minute to absorb the information. âSo, what about Charlie? The kid youâre sitting?â
Sylvia shrugged. âHeâs this little science geek. He has weird electronics stuff all over his room. He stays in there and works on his projects,â she said. âHe would never tell his father about us. Weâve been his sitters forever. Before his mother got sick, even.â
âWow.â
âYeah. So he just doesnât
