The rest can get rooms at the St. Regis with Malachi. What do yâall think about that?â
âSounds good to me,â Malachi replied.
Keilah nodded in agreement and informed her brother that he had the task of reserving rooms at the hotel and calling everyone to let them know about the arrangements.
âMe? Why me?â
She picked up Neariahâs cup. As she headed toward the kitchen, she said, âYou show up a week early, youâre going to have to work, and thatâs your first task.â
Malachi looked over at Ramsey, hoping to find an ally, but he was mistaken. Ramsey threw up his hands and said, âSorry, bro. I canât help you. The boss has spoken.â
Keilah returned to the table with the cup refilled for her daughter, who quickly turned it up. âHowâs business ?â she asked as she sat down.
Malachi finished off his second glass of wine and said, âThe casinos are doing great, especially the Special K, but itâs hard working with Keytone.â
The Special K was the familyâs second casino, named in honor of Keilah since she was the brothersâ only sister. Their other casino, the Lucky Chance, had been a huge success for the family as well, but it had experienced its ups and downs as the Chance men worked hard to continue running their late fatherâs legacy.
âI know it can be hard working with family, but Keytone is our brother, whether you like it or not. Youâre going to have to figure out a way to get his past out of your system. He did save your life, remember?â
Malachi lowered his head and remembered when the head of a gang kidnapped him and his brothersâwith the help of their trusted attorney, who had betrayed themâand held them hostage until they signed over their rights to their casino. They were freed only after Keilah, Ramsey, and Keytone rescued them in a huge shoot-out that left the gang leader and his entourage dead and the brothers free.
âYou donât have to remind me. I know he had a little bit to do with that, but you guys were there too.â
Keilah yelled, âJust face it, Malachi! Heâs our brother. Accept it and respect him.â
Ramsey interrupted the pair, trying to bring peace to his household. âListen, Malachi, I know itâs hard working with family sometimes, but Keilahâs right on this one.â
Keilah turned to Ramsey and asked, âBabe, are you saying Iâm difficult to work with?â
Ramsey reached over to his wife and took her hand and kissed it. âNo, sweetheart, I love working with you. Iâm just saying it can be stressful. Youâre my wife, so if anyone disrespects you, the husband in me will come out a lot faster than the business partner.â
Neariah squealed to get some attention. Malachi reached over and gave Neariah a tender piece steak.
âWith my situation itâs a little different. Itâs harder to run a business with family when all we seem to do is agree to disagree,â Malachi said.
âYou must be doing something right,â Ramsey replied. âYou guys have two very successful businesses. To keep your sanity, take more vacations. Otherwise, youâll burn out.â
Keilah stood and picked up her empty plate. As she walked toward the kitchen, she said, âYes, Malachi, take more vacations. Just make sure itâs far away from D.C.â
Malachi leaned back in his chair and yelled, âWhy you got to be so damn mean, Keilah?â
She walked back into the room and said, âIâm not being mean. Iâm keeping it real.â
Feeling he needed to put the subject to rest once and for all, Ramsey jumped into the conversation. âThatâs enough, Keilah. Cut Malachi some slack. Heâs your brother, and family is always welcome here. Stop giving him a hard time, because you know you miss them as much as they miss you.â
Ramsey then turned to Malachi. âNow for you,
