then wiped her hands on her napkin and reached out her hand for his.
There it was again. That tiny little buzz. He hadnât been imagining it.
Her hand was cooler than his. But it seemed to fit in his grasp.
âFirst Lieutenant Katsuko Williams. I joined when I was eighteen and did my nurse training. I did a few months in Georgia to complete my nurse training. The rest of the time Iâve been based here.â
She gently withdrew her hand from his and took another sip of her wine.
He looked at her carefully. In the brighter lights of the pizza place he could see just how flawless her skin was and just how dark her eyes were. No gold flecks. No trace of another colour. Just pure, deep, dark brown.
âKatsukoâs a nice name. What does it mean?â
âYou think my name means something?â
He shrugged. âEveryoneâs name means something. Mine is Frenchâit means wise.â
She let out a laugh and he raised his eyebrows. âOr, if youâre a fan of Lord of the Rings , it means ruling with elf wisdom in English.â
She spluttered. âYouâre joking!â
He shook his head. âIâm not.â He waved his phone at her. âWant to check it?â
âNo.â She waved over the waitress and spoke quickly. The waitress gave him a knowing smile and walked away.
âWhat did you say to her?â
âI ordered more drinks.â
âTrying to get me drunk?â
âAs if.â She leaned across the table towards him.
He hesitated. What was she doing? Was she actually flirting with him? No one could deny the electricity in the air around them or the occasional little gleam in her eye. But Katsuko Williams didnât strike him as a woman to mess with. And that just made him like her all the more. So he couldnât resist. He leaned forward too.
She looked him straight in the eye. âVictorious child.â
âWhat?â He was confused. So not what heâd thought she might say.
She sat back, looking pleased with herself. âYou asked me what my name meant.â
He blinked. She pulled her shirt a little straighter over the curves of her breasts. From the expression on her face it was clear she knew exactly what she was doing. She was playing him.
He pushed his plate away and pressed his forehead on the table with a sigh.
âWhat are you doing?â
He turned his head to the side. âIâm done. Iâve travelled too far. Iâve eaten too much. Worked for too long. And now my local tour guide is being mean to me.â
She gave a snort. âMean to you?â
He looked up through the floppy part of his hairâhe really needed to get that cut. âYes, mean to me.â
She folded her arms across her chest and he sat back up.
He liked her. She was smart. And direct. Maybe even a little bit quirky. This flirting could lead somewhere. He didnât do long-term. But he could be here for up to six months. She could make those six months fun. âVictorious child. I like it. But it doesnât quite have an elf-like ring to it. What was the other name they called you?â
She rolled her eyes and picked up her wine glass again. âNothing.â
She didnât like her nickname? Interesting. âIt wasnât nothing. It was faya -something.â
She sipped at her wine. âOnly close friends get to call me that.â
He was curious. Could he get to be in that category?
âSay it for me again?â
She sighed. âFaiyakuraka.â
He scrunched up his face and tried to concentrate on the sounds. âFay-acure-aka.â He leaned back, feeling pleased with himself. âFirecracker.â
âNot even close. You need to work on your accent.â
He took a drink from his beer bottle. âWill you help me with that?â
This time Katsuko dropped her head on the table. âGive me strength. Do you ever stop?â
âNot if I donât have to.â
He
