gone for a couple of days.â
â âBye, Catherine,â Violet said. âThanks for taking the time to tell us about the Seminoles.â
âI was glad to,â Catherine said with a sweet smile.
Violet watched Catherineâs car leave. Catherine was such a lovely girl. She certainly couldnât be guilty of doing anything bad.
âDo you think Catherine would introduce me to Lacota?â Benny asked.
Violet shook her head. âI doubt it, Benny. The Native Americans are friends with Catherine, but they might not like a stranger coming into their homes.â
Disappointed, Benny said only one word. âOh.â
âAre you hungry?â Violet asked, standing.
âBreakfast!â Benny said. âI almost forgot.â
âCome on, then, letâs give Jessie a hand.â Violet and Benny dashed back to their unit.
When they arrived, they found Jessie mixing pancake batter, and Henry, who had returned from Kayâs, broiling sausages.
âJust in time to eat,â Henry said, dishing up the sausages. âSit down, Benny.â
Violet set the syrup and butter on the table and poured the milk while Jessie placed a steaming stack of pancakes before Benny.
âHow did Kay take the news about the oranges?â Violet asked.
Henry helped himself to several sausages and passed them to Jessie. âKay wasnât happy about it, but sheâs determined to go ahead with redoing the motel.â
âGood,â Violet said, breathing a sigh of relief.
âAunt Jane is going into Lyndale this morning with Kay. Theyâre stopping at the bank where Kay plans to ask for a loan,â Henry added.
âI hope she gets it,â Jessie said.
âI hope so, too,â Henry replied. âAfter they go to the bank, Aunt Jane and Kay are staying in town for shopping and lunch.â
âGood for them,â Violet said.
âW-e-ll,â Jessie said, drawing out the word and smiling slyly. âKay did say the bedspreads and drapes will arrive today and if we wanted toââ
âIf we wanted to!â Violet said eagerly. âOf course we want to!â
âWant to what?â Benny said, licking his fork for the last drop of syrup.
Violetâs brown eyes twinkled. âWant to unpack the bedspread and drapes and fix up each room.â
âYes!â Benny said. âWeâll have a big surprise for Aunt Jane and Kay.â
âWe sure will,â Henry said with a chuckle. âKay said we all needed a break and that we should loaf today and go biking and swimming.â
âWe can do that and put on the spreads, too,â Jessie said, clearing her plate and glass. She smiled at Benny.
CHAPTER 7
Glittering Yellow Eyes
T he Aldens made up the beds with the brightly flowered bedspreads. Then they unpacked the matching drapes and in the afternoon, using the master key that Kay had given Jessie, hung them in Millicentâs and Catherineâs units. Neither was home so it was easy to work in their rooms.
While stripping off the pillows in Catherineâs room, Jessie brushed her arm against a book on the end table. The book clattered to the floor and a map fell out. She glanced at the map, noticing it was of the area. She was about to slip it back in the pages, when she glimpsed a red marking. âLook, Henry,â she said in a puzzled tone. âThis map has Kayâs motel circled in red.â She stopped. âAnd Adventure Hotel is circled, too!â
âThat is strange,â he said. âBut put it back. It probably doesnât mean anything.â
Jessie wasnât as sure as Henry that it didnât mean anything.
âWonât Catherine and Millicent be surprised when they return?â Violet asked.
Jessie nodded, replacing the map and saying nothing.
After lunch, they decorated their own rooms. Henry stood on a ladder, pulling the lovely lavender drape across the rod, while Jessie and
