others.
âIâm not surprised,â Kay said. âHeâs
all
about flash.â
âAnd not much to back it up,â Ray added.
âHeâs got a whole calendar of appearance dates and a maze-architect schedule,â Joe continued. âNothing here about coming to Cape Breton, though, or any mention of your dadâs festival.â
âAlso no surprise,â Kay muttered.
While Joe clicked away in the background, the twins gave Frank names and descriptions of people he could ask about Blackstoneâs whereabouts.
Joe finally closed his computer. âI managed to get his e-mail addresses and his telephone numbers,â he said with a grin, âand even his cell phone number. We can contact him directly, if we want.â
âYouâre a genius hacker,â Frank said, copying the numbers into his PDA. âFirst, letâs see if we can track him down without him knowing about it,â Frank said.
âI havenât told you the best part,â Joe said. âTurns out he has a U.S. driverâs license, which I copied onto this CD. Point me to a printer, and I can get us some mug shots to work with.â
âThereâs one in my room,â Ray said. âHelp yourself.â
Joe took the disc from his computer and printed out a dozen copies of Vincenzo Blackstoneâs face on Rayâs printer.
âYuck, thatâs definitely him,â Kay said when Joe returned with the mug shots.
âThis is great,â Frank said. âIâm going to work the crowd with theseâflash them around and see whether anyoneâs spotted him.â
âIâll go with you,â Ray said. âOh, Dad asked me to give you this card. Itâs for the film studio. Skip Jennin is the assistant director, and Dad told him to give you whatever you want.â
âPerfect,â Frank said, pocketing the card. âOkay, Iâm out of here. See you at eleven at the stables,â Frank told Joe. âJousting practice ⦠donât forget!â
âYouâll love the horses we picked out for you,â Ray said. âTheyâre really good with strangers and with the crowds on the field. But I know you both have ridden a lot, so theyâre pretty lively, too.â
âIâm so happy you guys are here,â Kay said as she watched Frank leave. âDadâs been planning this event for years. Heâs put all his energy and creativityââ
âAnd moneyââ Ray interjected.
âAnd
heart
,â Kay continued, âinto restoring the maze and sharing it with people. Itâs just
got
to be a success. Please donât let some jealous jerk ruin it!â
âWeâre on it,â Joe assured her. âDonât worry.â
Joe grabbed his computer and headed back up to the guest suite to drop it off. He pulled a lightweight blue sweater over his T-shirt and left the room. As he walked back toward the large, sweeping staircase, he peered down the small corridor that Frank had followed in the middle of the night.
Joe looked around. There was no one else on the second floor he could see or hear, so he headed straight for the door that Frank had told him about. It was unlocked, so he stepped into the room. He waited for a minute, but he heard nothing.
Remembering the description that Frank had given, Joe headed straight across the room to the closet with the medieval costumes. He pulled the hanging clothes aside to reveal the hidden door in the back wall of the closet. It was wide open, and the small stairway was awash with light from the room above. Joe heard someone pacing back and forth just beyond the top of the stairs. The sound suddenly stopped, and a familiar voice called out.
âIs someone down there?â Joe heard Alan say. âWhoâs thereâKay? Ray?â
âItâs Joe. May I come up?â
Alan walked to the top step and stared down atJoe. âMight as well,â
