and was getting bored with the job. Being a flight attendant was not even her first career choice. In high school it was Naomi who had always wanted to crisscross the globe, so after graduation she applied to all the major airlines and was finally hired by Pan-Afrika. After a year of hearing Naomi expounding the virtues of her glamorous lifestyle, flying to exotic destinations and meeting new people, Kennedy was intrigued, especially since the pre-law classes in college were a snore, so she put school on hold and filled out an application. After a series of interviews and basic exams, she was hired within a few months.
Passengers would often mistake Naomi and Kennedy for sisters, which was easy since they were both five feet seven inches tall and possessed curves that made the cheap polyester-blend blue uniform dresses look like designer originals. Together they were a lethal combination, partying on the coast of Casablanca one nightand line dancing in Lagos the next. Even on their off days they would jet over to Paris to scout out the sales at the boutiques along the Left Bank. Those were the good old days before Naomi got married and quit. Now Kennedy was seriously thinking about returning to college. She was no longer interested in law and was thinking about changing her major to merchandising, and becoming a buyer for a clothing store. Over the years she had spent plenty of time in offshore boutiques and duty-free shops. Kennedy loved shopping and figured that she might as well get paid for it, but that plan was still a long way off since she would have to practically start from square one, and take all new classes.
When the details were taken care of, Kennedy checked the first-class seat roster. As hard as she tried, she couldn’t get her mind off of the Mystery Man. Well, he wasn’t exactly a mystery since she knew his identity. She ran her finger down the names, but there was no Nigel Charles listed. Her heart sank. She felt like a teenager whose latest crush hadn’t made it to third-period English. She knew that his presence or lack thereof shouldn’t have affected her one way or the other, but it did. From the very first time she laid eyes on Nigel, she had a strong attraction to him, and though he didn’t give her a second look, she thought that if he was on board today, she might be able to catch his eye. Though it was a long shot, Kennedy thought that maybe Nigel would eventually ask her out on a date, but he wasn’t on board, so that wasn’t a possibility this trip. She tried to mask the feeling of disappointment with a phony smile when she greeted the passengers as they began to board.
“Not feeling well today?” That was Monica, her crewmate.
“What do you mean? I feel just fine.” She smiled quickly, trying to brush off the comment. Kennedy wanted to keep her thoughts of Nigel to herself, so she pretended not to know what Monica was alluding to.
Monica gave her that “Mother Knows Best” look. “Ken, how long have I known you?”
“Girl, what are you getting at?” she asked, playing the dumb role.
Monica was the mother hen of the crew and insisted on knowing everyone’s business. “Just answer the question.”
“We’ve been flying together for over eight years,” Kennedy answered, trying to put an end to this senseless inquisition.
“Exactly!” She nodded. “So I know when something’s up with you and I can tell by that phony-baloney smile that something’s bothering you.”
What was Kennedy going to say? That she was pining over a man she didn’t even know, that she was missing the presence of a virtual stranger? No, Kennedy wouldn’t say anything of the sort. Monica was a hopeless romantic, and Kennedy knew that any mention of a possible attraction would just spur her on and Kennedy would have to spend the next forty-eight hours listening to how Monica met her husband at thirty thousand feet. Well, Kennedy had heard that story a gazillion times and wasn’t in the mood
