him in surprise.
âYou mean he took himself out there?â said Libby.
âWhy not?â
âBut why on earth would he take a boat out at night with someone else?â asked Harry.
âTo show them something? Is there anything around you could only see at night?â
âI donât think so,â said Martha doubtfully. âThey go night fishing sometimes, but I donât remember Alec ever doing it.â She looked up and waved. âHereâs Neal, look. Alec did show him around a bit, I think.â
Neal came down the steps to the pontoon, panama hat in hand. He bent to kiss Martha on both cheeks.
âWe were just wondering, Neal,â said Martha, âif Alec would have taken his boat out at night. Do you think he would?â
âI donât know. I never went out on his boat.â Neal pulled out a chair and sat down. âI ordered coffee on my way down. I hope you donât mind.â
âMarthaâs been in touch with the consulate,â said Justin. âTheyâre going to intercede with the Jandarma. They need to trace Alecâs new-found family.â
âThey need to search his house, then,â said Neal. âHe didnât tell anyone the names of these people?â
âNo. Unless he told Sally,â said Martha. âShe might know.â
âSomebody mentioned her last night,â said Libby.
âWhere does she live?â asked Fran.
âOutside the village on the way to the coast road. I could ring her.â Martha stood up. âIâll go and find her number.â
While they waited for Martha to return, they studied the menu which had been left on the table and decided to stay for lunch.
âNo reply, so Iâve left a message,â said Martha, coming back to the table. âDid you want to eat?â
After orders had been taken, and Neal had declined, he stood up again. âIâm going back to the hotel. Iâll see you all later.â
They watched him cross the bridge in silence.
âWell, now.â Libby sat back in her chair. âWhy did he bother to walk all this way, stay for five minutes, and go again? His behaviour really is peculiar.â
âI think the whole thing has knocked him for six,â said Peter. âIt looks to me as though he and this Alec were having an affair.â
âYou could hardly call it that,â said Harry. âHe was here on holiday. It was a holiday fling if anything.â
âWhat do you think, Justin?â Libby turned to look at him. âYou introduced them, didnât you?â
Justin nodded.
âSo did they see more of each other after that?â
âYes, but I donât know anything more than that. Alec took Neal out a few times, but just to show him the country, really.â
âThatâs what it was, then,â said Libby confidently. âAn affair.â
During lunch the lady with the pink hair and her bushy-moustached husband arrived at restaurant. They stopped on the steps leading to the pontoon.
âI canât get down there,â said Bushy Moustache. âDamn silly place for a restaurant.â
âWe can sit here, then, look.â Pink Hair indicated a table on the same level as the steps. âThen you wonât have to use the steps.â She looked over and waved at the rest of the hotel contingent. âHello, there!â
They all waved back.
âThank goodness he doesnât like the steps,â muttered Libby. âOtherwise they might have joined us.â
âHeâs too grumpy to want to join anyone,â said Harry. âHave you noticed, if thereâs a conversation in the bar he just sits and stares off into the distance and has to have everything repeated? He just doesnât take any notice.â
âI think heâs probably a bit deaf,â said Fran. âAnd doesnât want to admit it.â
âThatâs charitable,â said Libby.
