and sat on the porch.
"So what were you up to last night? Preston Stevens saw you come in and then you left almost as soon as you came."
"I was busy." Ryan took a long cold sip of his beer, enjoying Jet's interest. The cousins had hung out all their lives and he was one of the few people, apart from Jet's wife Lucy, who Jet was relaxed with.
"I had a pretty sub I wanted to introduce you to," Jet said.
"Not interested. I'm done with The Club."
"What? Why?" Jet asked, clearly surprised. "Is it because of Kerry?"
"Yeah. The place reminds me of her. Kerry and I had a lot of fun there but I'm not interested in random hook ups. I need something more. When I find out what happened to Kerry, I won't be going back."
"That's a bit rough," Jet said, clearly disappointed.
"I mean it, Jet," Ryan said. He noticed he still had grease on the back of his hand. He needed to shower and scrub up. He'd called Cari up and asked her out for dinner at Bella Bella Italiano. She'd said yes. Talk about doing the dating back to front with the sex coming before the date but he was prepared to do what was necessary. He liked this girl.
"What are you smiling about in such a self satisfied way?"
Ryan took a long sip of his beer. "Never mind."
Jet sat up straight. "What are you up to? I didn't see you hook up with anyone at the club."
"Check all my moves on the security cameras, did you?" Ryan asked with a grin.
"Of course I did. You talked to Annabel and left. What was that about?"
"Just saying hi. I enjoy Annabel's company and we haven't caught up properly since I've been back." Ryan's relationship was too new to discuss and he didn't want gossip hitting the club.
Jet frowned. "You look like you got laid."
Ryan just laughed.
A Mercedes sports car drew up in Ryan's driveway.
When the passenger window wound down, he saw it was Annabel. Conscious that Jet was beside him, Ryan strode down the steps and went to say hello to Annabel.
She gave Jet a wave, and Ryan a kiss on the cheek. "I've never seen Cari so happy. Thank you."
He grinned. "We have a date tonight."
"I know. You realize she almost never leaves the house except for school. I had to drag her out for a coffee. I'm going away for a few days. Will you watch out for her?"
"Sure. Look Annabel, I've seen grief do strange things to people. Brave guys go nuts and curl up into little balls. Some people need help to make it pass."
"But it has been two years since Rob died. I've been trying to get Cari into therapy for a year. She won't go. I don't know what else to do."
"Maybe Cari's a homebody," Ryan said.
"Yes, she is, but it's more than that," Annabel said. "Look at the way she couldn't go out on a date with you and she's attracted to you."
"Well, it's early days. She's accepted a date tonight. Let's see how that goes." Grief was a weird animal. Some people moved through it faster than others. Not everyone wanted therapy. He got that.
Relief passed over Annabel's face. "I love my twin. Since Mom and Dad passed away, she's all I've got."
Annabel's sub, who sat in the driver's seat, put his hand on her knee and gave it a squeeze. "You've got me, hon."
Annabel gave the man next to her a smile. "Ryan, have you met my boyfriend, Con?"
Ryan remembered Annabel's sub kissing her thigh last night. "Not formally."
"Pleased to meet you, Ryan. I'm taking Annabel to my ranch for the night," Con said, with his Texan drawl.
"So I'll have Cari all to myself," Ryan said with a grin.
"Keep an eye on my twin," Annabel said.
Con backed out of the drive and Annabel blew him a kiss.
He'd be keeping more than an eye on Cari, Ryan thought. After all, he had her diary. He knew what her deepest desires were and he looked forward to discovering more.
Cari slid on sexy lace undies with relish. Ryan was coming to pick her up and take her out for dinner. Cari hadn't dated anyone since Rob had died two years ago. The shock from Rob's sudden heart attack had been devastating. They'd been having
