waned. A hollow feeling of defeat engulfed him as she disappeared from sight. She’d read the truth on his face and he wouldn’t lie to her anyway. He had and could take other women anally because they weren’t his mate and they meant little or nothing to him.
He raised his hand to his face and his fingertips massaged his temples as he considered his plight. They had to complete their assignment as soon as possible because he couldn’t survive another session.
He released a heavy breath. “Rebecca.” If she knew the truth. He shook his head. “Impossible.” He had to keep his feelings and desires to himself. Doing anything else would ultimately destroy the spirit of the woman he loved.
Mustering all his willpower, he donned a stoic mask as he proceeded toward their assigned room.
He opened their door to find Rebecca’s robe on the floor but no sign of her. Her belongings were still scattered about so he assumed she just needed a bit of space and he couldn’t blame her.
Dropping his robe next to hers, he headed for the bathing facility. He’d been pleased to discover the spa still offered hot water bathing as so many resorts chose the less expensive alternative of chemical steam cleansing.
Chapter Four
Rebecca threw the few remaining items in her carryall as she heard the water from the bathroom turn off. She felt the steam on her back as he opened the bathroom door and she had to steel herself not to turn and devour him with her gaze.
“Rebecca.”
“Holton,” she returned but didn’t look up. Instead, she played with the clasp on her bag.
“We have an assignment to complete.” She could feel him close behind her.
“I’ve acquired the info.”
“What?”
She shrugged. “ Teo and Ellia were in session and the office was unattended.”
“Are you crazy? You could have been caught and jeopardized the whole mission.” He grabbed her shoulder and spun her around to face him. His eyes flashed angrily at her but it was his near-naked form that caused her heart to race. A towel wrapped low around his hips was his only covering. She swallowed hard as she tried to control her errant thoughts.
“I’m fine.”
“You are not experienced enough—”
“I got the job done. I didn’t need you or your weapon.” Shrugging, she pulled away from his grasp. “I’m ready to go when you are.”
His eyes narrowed on her face. “Fine. I doubt we will find anything useful in the data since their office was left unattended.”
He turned away and her breath caught in her throat. She’d seen his tattoo before but today the colors were more vivid. The reddish-brown bird now had feathers the exact color of her hair. There was something erotic about the way the encasement cradled the bird. She longed to touch it…him…just once more but she could not.
“Interesting tattoo. It seems to change colors.”
His spine stiffened. “ Cragon males are tattooed when they reach adulthood.”
She snorted. “Did you choose the design?”
“They are always the same except for the color of the feathers.” He dropped his towel and her thoughts scattered.
“Oh.” She turned away before she embarrassed herself again. “The colors seem different today. Bolder.”
“They may be,” he muttered. Every muscle in his body clenched as he fought the urge to turn and take her in his arms. He would give anything to make love to her one more time but it wasn’t to be. He had to let her go before he destroyed her.
Her eyes on his back almost destroyed his resolve. Knowing that she was looking at his tattoo but didn’t know the significance saddened him. His caged bird now wore feathers of red, the exact shade of Rebecca’s hair. Originally the feathers on the bird were a dull brown as with all Cragon males. The feather color changed to match the hair color of a mate once one was chosen.
He knew she desired him. The faragon in her body ensured that but it would fade from her system and she would move on.
