to whine like a little kid.
    She shook her head, but then he held her arm out straight and tickled her underneath, making her squeal.
    “Aaah, no!”
    But he showed no mercy, chasing after her after she managed to get free and tickling her until she was screaming with equal joy and terror, and they were lying on the sand together.
    “Mercy!” she said.
    “Okay.” He flopped down beside her on the sand. “You’ll tell me now?”
    “Oh, all right. But promise you won’t laugh.”
    He rolled over on his side to look at her, his brown sugar hair falling down in a curl over his forehead.
    “Promise.”
    “All right, then. I was thinking about us getting married. And about … about our…”
    “Our children?” he said.
    “Yes.”
    He kissed her on the lips. “So I’m not the only one then?”
    “Huh?” She couldn’t imagine that he’d ever daydream about their children like she did.
    He grinned. “Wanna have seven?”
    “Seven!” She considered it. “I don’t even know. I’d be grateful to just have one to start with. We can think of more later. My Aunt Vanessa can’t have any. But you know Peterson and his wife, they have six, and Peterson’s brother has nine.”
    “Wow,” Theo said. “That’s a lot. Someone I knew back in my hometown had thirteen.”
    “How do they manage?” Angelique said. “I would only have that many if I was rich.” Then she realized, well, if she was going to be with Theo, they were going to be rich beyond her imagination.
    “Well, however many we have, I know one thing,” Theo said.
    “What?”
    He pushed her thin braids back from her dark face and gazed into her eyes. “That I want to be your best friend for life. Best friend and lover and supporter and fan.” He put on a silly, over exaggerated American accent. “Hey, Angelique, did you know I’m your greatest fan?”
    She batted her eyelids and flicked her hand. “Why thank you, dahhhling.”
    “You’re crazy,” Theo said. “Just like me.”
    “Yep.”
    He looked deep into her eyes, and she saw beyond their color, deep into something else entirely. “You think this can last forever?”
    Angelique grinned. “Heck yeah.”
