very angry Vic Molina.
âIf you have something to say, say it back here!â Marcy told him over her shoulder. âI donât want to be embarrassed in front of hundreds of people!â
âAll right,â Vic said, oblivious to Nancy, Jack, and the other stagehands. âI will. Every time a pretty girl bid for that date with me, you totally ignored her!â
âYouâre being ridiculous,â Marcy said. âI just called out the bids I saw. Now, why donât you go out there and have dinner like everyone else?â
âWhatâs the matter? Are you jealous?â The producerâs dark eyes were fixed on Marcyâs face. âYou donât want me, but you donât want anyone else to have me either, is that it?â
âWhatâs the big deal, Vic?â Marcy asked. âThis is just a silly auction. Donât you think youâre blowing it all out of proportion?â
âIâll show you proportion!â Vic said, grabbing an old stool and smashing it against the wall.
âVic!â Marcy said, her hands flying to her cheeks.
Nancy stepped back, making sure she was out of the producerâs path. What a violent temper, she thought. Glancing over at Jack Cole, she saw his hands ball into fists, ready to join the fight. Luckily, he didnât get the chance.
Vic stormed away. At the ballroom door, he turned back to Marcy and muttered something Nancy couldnât make out.
As soon as he left, Marcy turned to Nancy and Jack. âI have to get back onstage,â she said. âItâs time to auction off the date with Samantha.â
Nancy went into the ballroom as Marcy returned to the stage. But first she noticed Jack staring after Marcy with a hard look on his face.

When the event was over, Marcyâs limousine dropped off Susan, Nancy, and George at Susanâs house. âI didnât want to say anything in front of Marcy,â Susan said as they entered the building, âbut I couldnât believe how much Vic Molina bid for that date with Samantha Savage!â
âHe sure helped the benefit. It was thebiggest single contribution of the night,â George said.
âI loved when the kids from the hospital sang,â Nancy said as Susan fished her key from her handbag. âThey were so cute.â
âHey, would you two like to go out for some dessert?â Susan asked suddenly.
âHow can you think about dessert after that dinner?â George asked.
âTrue,â Susan said, opening the door and leading her friends inside. âI just wanted to show off my neighborhood. Itâs really the best. But it is kind of late.â
âAnd I have a lot of work to do tomorrow,â Nancy said, following Susan up the stairs.
Susan unlocked the door of the apartment and flicked on the light so they could enter.
âIâll help open up the bed,â Nancy said, walking over to the futon and unhooking one end.
âWhatâs tomorrowâs show about, Susan?â George asked, getting her nightgown from her suitcase.
âParents and teens who donât speak to one another,â Susan answered.
âSounds intense,â George said. âWhat will you be doing?â
âIâll stay with the guests before the showâkeep them comfortable, get them soft drinksâstuff like that,â Susan explained, sitting on theedge of the futon. Then, changing the subject, she asked, âWho do you think is doing all these awful things to Marcy?â
âOrdinarily, Iâd say it would have to be someone at the studio,â Nancy said. âBut with those missing pages from the security log, Iâm not sure. So far, it seems to me that the two people with the most against Marcy are Vic Molina and Samantha Savage. Neither of them works at Stern Productions.â
âSpeaking of people with something against Marcy,â George said, âKaren
