Maddyâs increasingly bold behavior with her coterie of officers and Theaâs attempts to restrain her.
âDid you hear that a Caveâs here?â Maddy asked.
Praying her high color was taken for alarm, Thea gasped, âNo! Truly?â
Maddyâs eyes sparkled. âDeliciously alarming, isnât it? The new Vile Viscount. Motherâs certain weâll all be murdered or worse. But I ask you, is being raped worse than being murdered?â
âMaddy!â Thea protested, looking around to be sure no one was in earshot. âWhat does he look like?â
âI havenât met him yet, but Iâve been on the hunt.â
âHow can you hunt someone if you donât know what he looks like?â
âDarkly demonic. That was Alesiaâs description. He was pointed out to her and now sheâs in a quake. Marchampton knows him,â she said, referring to one of the officers sheâd been with. âDark hair and eyes, he said. Foreign-looking because of an Italian mother. There wonât be many like that here, especially with horns, tail, and an odor of brimstone.â
âMaddyâ¦â
Her cousin laughed. âWell, Alesia was so ridiculous. Cully adores him.â
âWhat?â
Cully was Lieutenant Claudius Debenham, Maddyâs brother.
âDesperate case of hero worship. Terrifyingly terrific and at times insane, he says.â
âThatâs adoring praise?â But it seemed frighteningly accurate to Thea and wrecked any hope of the hellish encounter being a joke.
âThey even call him Mad Dog,â Maddy said with relish.
âGood Godâ¦.â
âHe was wreaking his madness on the French , Thea! When did you become so chickenhearted?â
Thea pulled herself together. âEverythingâs been a bit fraught this evening.â Now there was an understatement. âI must go and find Dare.â
âHe has enough caretakers,â Maddy said.
Thea colored. If sheâd niggled at Maddy over her behavior with officers, Maddy had niggled at her protective hovering over Dare. Thea knew that during her brotherâs recovery sheâd become obsessive, she and her mother both.
âI have reasons for needing to speak to him now,â she said.
Maddyâs eyes sharpened. âYou have secrets. Tell!â
Thea said exactly the wrong thing. âNo.â
Maddy grabbed her arm. âYou do! Whatâs going on?â
âI canât tell you. Not now, at least. Itâs nothing really, but I have to find Dare. Just to make sure everythingâs all right.â
âVery well, but Iâm coming with you.â Maddy linked arms with Thea. âAnd keep a weather eye out for dark and demonic. I need to meet the dread Darien.â
The thought of Maddy involved with her attacker was terrifying.
They had only reached the door of the room when their way was blocked by a strapping blond officer in scarlet and gold.
âDid you hear?â Cully demanded gleefully, in a voice loud enough for a parade ground. âDareâs cleared! Canem Cave says he saw him fall. No question about it.â
People around began to chatter.
âHow extraordinary!â Maddy exclaimed.
âHow wonderful,â Thea said, meaning it, but her heart suddenly threatened to choke her.
âCanem Cave?â Maddy asked. âDo you mean the Cave? Viscount Darien?â
âWho else? He says Dare was doing just as he ought,â Cully went on, deliberately making sure everyone heard. âRiding hell for leather with a message when a shot brought down his horse and he disappeared under a wave of hooves. Canem says itâs a miracle he survived.â
âWhy Canem?â Maddy asked.
âFrom cave canem , I think,â her brother said.
âHeâs called Dog?â Maddy asked and laughed.
Her brother flushed. âNot in that way. What a stupid creature you are, Maddy.â
âWell,
