risk.â
âWhat about me?â says Candy. âOkay, some Âpeople are going to think youâre an asshole for being around Chihiro, but you still get to be you. Iâm no one.â
I hadnât really thought of that.
âLook, Iâm still trying to get my brain around all this too. Maybe down the line it would be safe to let a Âcouple of more Âpeople know. But weâve got to play this out for a while. Chihiro didnât even exist a Âcouple of weeks ago. You stick out. Let Âpeople get used to you. Then maybe we can think about letting other Âpeople in.â
Candy thinks for a minute.
âIâll give it till the end of January. Then Iâm talking to Fairuza. Iâm not asking you. Iâm telling you.â
âFine. But sheâs the only one for the time being.â
âI guess.â
âListen. If this thing falls apart, itâs not just on you and me. Thereâs other Âpeople too. Julie. Brigitte. Allegra and Vidocq.â
âArenât you maybe leaving someone out?â says Kasabian.
âI was getting to you, Iron Man.â
âI thought we discussed no more nicknames.â
I ignore that.
âI know you think Iâm a drag sometimes, but thereâs a lot at stake here.â
âI know,â Candy says quietly.
âI saw you dead once. I donât want to see that again.â
âI wasnât really dead, dumb-Âass.â
âYou sure looked like you were.â
âThatâs âcause Iâm such a good actress. Me and Brigitte are going to star in a remake of Thelma & Louise .â
âAs I recall, that didnât end well.â
âIn our version the car is a Delorean time machine, so we just drive off and have adventures with pirates and robots.â
âOr Lethal Weapon, â says Kasabian. âYou could do a girl-Âgirl remake.â
âOr Bill and Ted, â she says.
She looks at me.
âI need another drink. You have supplies upstairs?â
âYou know it.â
I step aside and let her lead the way.
âHello? Is anyone there?â
Itâs a manâs voice coming from the storage room.
I look at Kasabian.
âLock the front door.â
âSure. Itâs not like weâre a place of business or anything.â
As he does it, Candy and I knock on the storage room door.
âYou all right in there?â
âWhere am I?â
I open the door. He squints and pushes himself back to the farthest corner of the cot I set up for him, huddling there like a bug.
He says, âItâs too bright.â
Candy and I go inside and close the door. Itâs ripe in here. The guy wasnât clean when I met him. Add an extra week to that. Weâre in a cheese factory.
Candy hits the overhead light. Itâs only a sixty-Âwatt. Candy liked the room dim when the band rehearsed.
I take a step closer, getting between the guy on the cot and Candy in case heâs as unhinged as he looks.
âIs that better?â
Slowly, he opens his eyes. He keeps a hand up, blocking the bulb. When he can focus he stares at me.
âWhere am I?â
âAt Max Overdrive. Do you remember coming to me at Bamboo House of Dolls?â
He sits up and leans against the wall. Candy steps around me, fiddling with her phone. Who the fuck is she calling right now?
âWhoâs that?â he says.
âA friend. What do you remember?â
He looks at the blanket, his hands, and the room like heâs never seen any of it before. When he looks at me I can see the gears starting to turn in his head.
âYouâre Stark.â
âThatâs right. And this is Chihiro. You met her the other night too.â
He stares at Candy for a little too long.
âThatâs not her real face,â he says. âOr her name.â
Candy shoots me a worried look. I hold up a hand to say âbe cool.â
âYou can see through
