he got back to his room and looked out his window, the barn was dark.
He rose early, washed up, and went downstairs. No breakfast yet. First they had to work the horse.
When he got out to the corral, Canby was walking Whirlwind around, already saddled.
âI was about to send somebody to wake you,â Canby said.
âIâm ready,â Clint said. âIâll get Eclipse saddled.â
âYou gonna put that big McClellan saddle on him?â
âWhat else?â
Clint looked at Whirlwind, who was wearing a racing saddle that looked like a postage stamp.
âWhereâs your jockey?â Clint asked.
âHeâll be here,â Canby said. âBring out your horse.â
Clint went into the barn, paused to look at the hay-filled stall he and Alicia had used the night before. Then he walked to Eclipseâs stall, backed the big gelding out, and saddled him.
When he came out with the big Darley, there was a smaller man standing by Ben Canby, and Alicia was standing off to one side. She gave Clint a shy glance, then looked away.
âClint,â Canby said, âthis is my jockey, Davy Flores.â
Clint shook hands with the diminutive man, who eyed Eclipse and asked, âWhoâs this?â
âThis is Eclipse.â
âWow,â Davy said, âIâve never ridden a horse this size.â
âThatâs because they donât race horses this size,â Clint said.
Davy looked at Canby.
âAm I supposed to outrun this monster?â
âNo,â Canby said, âClint is just gonna run along with you. He wants a close look at Whirlwind.â
âWell, okay,â Flores said.
Canby gave Davy a leg up onto Whirlwind, then walked over and mounted his own mare.
âWeâll ride to the track,â he said.
âSuits me,â Clint said. âIs Alicia coming?â
âShe wants to see this,â Canby said. âSheâll walk.â
Clint rode over to her and reached his hand down.
âCome on,â he said, âIâll give you a ride.â
He hauled her up behind him, and she immediately pressed her breasts into his back and wrapped her arms around him.
âYou should know something,â she whispered into his ear.
âWhatâs that?â he asked quietly.
âDavy Flores is in love with me,â she said. âAnd heâs mean.â
âIâll watch out for the little guy,â he said. âWhat about you?â
âWhat about me?â
âAre you in love with him?â
âNo,â she said. âHeâs too . . . small.â
Clint had met a lot of small men with big chips on their shoulders. Davy Flores hadnât struck him that way, but then theyâd only had time to shake hands.
They rode over to the training track and Clint lowered Alicia to the ground. Canby rode over to sit beside Clint.
âI only want him to go six furlongs,â the trainer said.
âOkay,â Clint said.
âDonât press him, Clint,â Canby said, âjust ride alongside him.â
âDonât worry,â Clint said, âI wonât hurt your little horse.â
He rode onto the track, where Davy Flores already had Whirlwind prancing about. When Clint rode up alongside them, the smaller man looked up at him.
âBe careful with that big horse,â Davy said.
âDonât worry,â Clint said, âwe wonât step on you.â
Davy Flores did not take that as a joke. In fact, his face got red.
âI just meant donât get in my way,â the jockey said. âWhirlwind is the star. Got it?â
âI got it,â Clint said. âWhirlwind is the star. So where do we start from?â
âFollow me.â
Whirlwind led the way to the starting point. Canby sat his horse off to one side, holding a stopwatch in his hand.
âThe boss will call it,â Davy said.
âI wonât start âtil you
