me. He had something bright yellow and wiggly in his hand. For a second I thought it might be real, but when I got closer, I saw it was made of rubber. Still, I pretended to be scared.
âOh no! A lizard!â I cried. âIs it slimy?â
âHeâs not slimy. His name is Charles,â Jake said. âHere, feel him.â
Jake put the rubber lizard in my hand. âHe feels nice and smooth,â I said.
Emma looked at me. âSorry. Mom had to work the Saturday shift at the library.â
âNo problem,â I said. I slid into my seat and pulled Jake onto my lap. âJake can help us design our cupcakes. What kind of cupcakes should we make, Jake?â
âLizard cupcakes!â he cried.
Mia laughed. âNow thatâs a winning idea.â
âWe need to get serious, guys,â Alexis said. âWe canât just try to win this fund-raiser. We have to win it big-time .â
âAlexis is right,â Emma agreed. âIt would be terrible if the PGC beat us. It could really hurt our business.â
Alexis flipped open her laptop. âIâll take notes,âshe said. âKatie, what do you know about Callieâs baking skills?â
âSheâs pretty good,â I admitted. âHer mom and my mom are friends, and theyâre the ones who taught me and Callie how to bake. I know Callieâs mom will help her if she asks.â
Alexis looked thoughtful. âI donât know about Maggie and Bella, but Iâm pretty sure Bella doesnât bake. Vampires donât like to eat cupcakes, right?â
âIâve heard Maggie say that her family goes out to restaurants all the time,â Mia added. âSo I bet Maggie doesnât know how to bake either.â
âThat definitely works in our favor,â Alexis said, typing furiously. âWe have a whole year of baking experience as a club.â
âHey, donât we have to register or something?â I remembered.
âIâll check the schoolâs website,â Alexis said, typing some more. After a few clicks, she stopped and raised her eyebrows. âWell, this is interesting.â
I looked over her shoulder. âWhat?â
âThereâs a list of clubs that have entered already,â Alexis said. âSee this one? The BFC: the Best Friends Club. Callie Wilson, Maggie Rodriguez, and Bella Kovacs.â
âThey changed their name?â I asked.
âI donât get it,â Alexis said, sitting back. âSo what are they declaring? That they are now not popular?â
âOh who cares?â I asked, suddenly feeling cranky. âI am so sick of them!â
Honestly, it felt like another direct blow from Callie. Like she was saying that Maggie and Bella were her best friends and not me. Which was true. But it felt personal. Like she was rubbing it in.
Alexis ignored my crankiness. âI mean, it makes no sense,â she said. âArenât they worried this will hurt their popularity? It seems risky.â
âI donât know, itâs kind of nice,â Mia said. âWhen they called themselves the Popular Girls Club, it was obnoxious, right? But thereâs nothing obnoxious about being best friends.â
Unless you dump your old best friend to get new ones, I thought. But I didnât say it.
âMaybe Callie is trying to make the PGCâI mean, the BFCâmore friendly,â Emma suggested.
âWhatever,â I said. âShouldnât we start planning our cupcakes?â
âOh, before I forget, is everyone coming to our Labor Day barbecue on Monday?â Emma asked.
âOf course,â Alexis replied.
âMe too,â said Mia.
I cringed. I totally forgot to ask my mom about it. Every year we have this tradition of going to Callieâs house on Labor Day. But being around Callie was the absolute last thing I wanted to do.
Mom will just have to understand, I thought. I want to be
