sheâs taking her dinner with the men?â
âSheâll manage, Mr Malloy, sheâll be sitting right next to her daddy.â
The foreman laughs â itâs a fair enough answer. Joe Bergman is still a big man and has earned a lot of respect with his fists in the past. Thereâs not too many in the shed will truck with him even now heâs getting to be an old bastard. Mike Malloy sighs. âIâll speak to the owner, Joe. Thatâs all I can promise. Fair enough?â
Joe nods, though heâs not too happy. Jessica knows that he didnât want to involve George Thomas.
They are kept waiting outside the tally clerkâs office for two hours before the owner finally appears, Mike Malloy beside him. George Thomas is a smallish barrel of a man with a big gut and a very red face, and even with him wearing a hat you know he must be bald on top. Heâs dressed up to the nines, wearing riding boots, jodhpurs, a tweed jacket and tie. Jessica wonders if heâs off to a meeting or the races or something until Joe tells her later thatâs how owners dress in the shearing season. âThis your girl, Joe?â he asks, pointing a stubby finger at Jessica.
Joe touches the brim of his hat, too proud to lift it off his head altogether. âAfternoon Mr Thomas, sir,â he says and puts his big hand on Jessicaâs shoulder. âJessica, this is Mr Thomas.â
George Thomas grunts, ignoring the greeting. âThis isnât girlâs work, Joe.â He turns to Jessica. âWhat do you know about sheep, eh?â
Jessica keeps her eyes on her boots, and answers shyly, âA bit, sir.â
âA bit? A bit isnât enough, lass. Can you shear?â Itâs a cruel question, Jessica is plainly too small to handle a fully grown ewe. âIf itâs a lamb, sir,â she replies, looking up at George Thomas for the first time.
âHmm. Can you crutch? Tar? Sweep? Pick up and throw a fleece?â
âThe first three, sir. I reckon Iâll be able to do the other when Iâve growâd a bit and theyâve learned me.â Jessica holds George Thomasâs eyes for a moment then looks down at her boots again. âSheâs a good worker,â Joe mumbles.
âSheâs a cheeky young bugger,â the boss of Riverview Station replies. âGot all the answers. If you ask me, sheâs too clever for her own good.â
Joe stiffens, not knowing how to take the remark, but Thomas doesnât seem to notice. âJoe Bergman, youâve been shearing in my shed for fifteen years and Iâve no quarrel with your work. I know you havenât a boy of your own to help, but .. .â
Joe cuts in quickly, âI wouldnât take a boy in her place, sir. The girlâs a damn sight better than any lad her age.â
George Thomas is unimpressed. Heâs not the sort to take notice of other folksâ opinions. âItâs putting temptation in the way of the men, I donât like it.âJoe looks surprised â the idea that Jessica might be a temptation to men hasnât entered his head. âIâll be in the shed meself, Mr Thomas, keeping a sharp eye on her.â âHummph!â George Thomas thinks a moment and then seems to make up his mind. âWeâll put her in with Jack and young William Simon, itâs their first full season on the shears.â
Joe smiles. âSheâll do you proud, sir.â
The owner of Riverview now turns to Jessica. âYouâll be the tar boy and sweep for the two lads. Jackâs my son and heâll probably make a mess of things, always does, but young Billyâs a good boy and heâll teach you or throw you out, one or the other, I donât much care which. I hope you know what youâre doing, Joe,â he says, prodding him in the chest with his forefinger. âSheâll get no special treatment, mind.â
âDonât expect
