off talking to Taylor.â
âI asked Khloe if sheâd seen you, but she was dancing with Zack and they were making googly eyes at each other. Totally not helpful.â
âI was gone at least half an hour,â I said. âWhat happened after you talked to Khloe?â
Someone turned down the music, and Lexa stepped closer. âClare found me. She told me that Drew had asked her about you and sheâd lied to him.â
âLied how?â
âClare had seen you and a guy sheâd assumed was Drew go outside. But since Drew was standing in front of her and looking for you, Clare realized youâd left with another guy.â
I groaned. âThis is so bad!â
âIt could have been. Clare saved youâshe told Drew that a group of your friends from English class had dragged you off on a carriage ride. Perfect timing, because the carriage was actually gone.â
âDid Drew see me outside?â
Lexa shook her head. âDonât think so. Clare wrangled Khloe away from Zack for a few minutes and told her the deal. Khlo managed to get Zack and Drew into a show-off at who was better at pool.â
âSo I made it back in time beforeââ
âFound you!â
I jumped at the voice behind me. I whirled around to see a wide-eyed, unmasked Drew.
âSorry I scared you, Lauren,â he said. âWas the haunted trail ride really spooky?â
My mouth was dry. I had to tell him about Taylor, and my friends didnât even know the whole story.
âYeah, Lauren got out of the carriage after the ride was over and tracked me down to say I might have gone a teensy bit overboard with the glowing-eyed bats.â Lexa smiled at Drew and made a mock youâre a total wimp face at me.
âHappy birthday,â Drew said. âI got here late and then couldnât find you. Iâm glad I finally did.â
He took a step closer, and I could smell his body washâs hint of grapefruit.
âMe too,â I said. âIâm so happy you came.â
Lexa tipped her head and took a step back, smiling. âIâll see you two later.â
She was gone, leaving me to tell Drew what had happened tonight.
YOUR WISH ISN â T COMING TRUE
I STARED INTO DREWâS EYES. THEY LOOKED shades bluer tonightâif that was even possible.
âYou look beautiful,â Drew said, his eyes not leaving mine. âIâm not sure what kind of dress thatâs called, but whatever it isâitâs pretty on you.â
I laughed. âThank you, and because you complimented me, I wonât take points off because you didnât know that Iâm wearing a spaghetti-strap dress with a sequin bodice, and if I said the rest, youâd probably be confused for the rest of the night.â
Drew twisted his mouth into an oops gesture. âYeah . . . you lost me at âspaghetti-strap.â â
âI do know what youâre wearing,â I said. âThe thin blue pinstripes are great against your white shirt, andI like the black jacket and matching pants.â
Drew wiped fake sweat off his brow. âZack and I helped each other. At least I know one of us looks good.â He grinned. âAnd you havenât even seen my mask yet.â
He held up a black mask with silver cross-stitching that covered his face from forehead to chin.
âI love it, but you better keep it off or weâll lose each other again,â I said. âHereâs mine.â I put my mask up to my face, and Drewâs reaction was exactly what Iâd hoped for. A smile spread across his face. He took a quick breath.
âWow,â Drew said. âLauren, that looks so cool on you.â
âIâm glad you like it,â I said.
I let my mind wander for a second. I wanted to stay behind my mask and dance in the ballroom.
âWant to dance?â Drew asked.
âLike you read my mind,â I said. âBut first,
