Jasper had been in that chair before. It made him nervous because his feet didnât touch the ground. âEarl canât sit,â he said. âHis legs donât bend. Can I just stand with him?â
Mrs. Kinoshita let him. She asked, âSo, Jasper John Dooley, what happened out there?â
The words rushed out of Jasper. âIt wasnât me it was Earl the girls wanted us to be babies and he got mad. He doesnât know when heâs being mean because he doesnât have a heart are you going to take away my star?â
Mrs. Kinoshita noticed the star then, shining on his chest. âAre you the Star of the Week, Jasper?â
Jasper nodded. He was surprised she didnât know. She was the principal.
Mrs. Kinoshita smiled, showing the friendly bit of green again. âJasper, if youâre the Star of the Week, nobody can take that away from you.â
âNot even the principal?â
âNot even me.â
Jasper felt much, much better then.
âSo Earl is a bit of a troublemaker?â Mrs. Kinoshita asked, folding her hands on her desk.
âHeâs jealous,â Jasper said. âHe wants to be the Star, too, but Iâm the Star this week.â
âI understand,â Mrs. Kinoshita said. âDid you know I once had two little boys?â
âWhat happened to them?â Jasper asked.
âThey grew up. But when they were small? Oh, my goodness. They squabbled all the time. You used to be an only child, didnât you?â
âYes.â
âYou must miss that now.â
âI do!â Jasper cried. âIf I was still an only child, I wouldnât be here in your office!â
Mrs. Kinoshita got up from her desk and opened her file cabinet. She rooted around for a minute. âThatâs funny. I donât have any record of Earl being registered at our school.â
âHeâs not.â
âWell, thatâs not allowed, Jasper. Iâm afraid Earl canât go back to the classroom with you. I suggest he stay here with me for the rest of the day and you pick him up when itâs time to go home. How does that sound?â
âJust a minute, Mrs. Kinoshita. Earl is saying something.â Jasper leaned closer to his brother. He was starting to be able to understand Earlâs grumbles and growls. âEarl says his legs hurt from standing all the time. Can he lie down in the sickroom?â
âCertainly. Iâll take him over in a minute. You can go now, Jasper. The bell has already rung.â
âThank you, Mrs. Kinoshita,â Jasper said. He whispered, âI donât think his legs really hurt. He just feels bad because he got in trouble.â
Mrs. Kinoshita nodded. She knew how kids felt. âAnd congratulations on being the Star this week, Jasper,â she said.
After he left the office, Jasper took his time going back to his classroom, just in case math was happening there. He stopped to look at all the art on the walls. He drank from the water fountain. By the time he walked in the door, a big commotion was going on. It didnât seem to be about math.
Ms. Tosh asked, âIs Ori with you, Jasper?â
âNo,â Jasper said.
âLeon? Go get Mrs. Kinoshita. Hurry.â
âI was just talking to Mrs. Kinoshita,â Jasper said.
âI told her,â Isabel said. âI told Ms. Tosh what you did with Earl.â
Ms. Tosh didnât seem to care what Jasper and Earl had done. âOri is missing,â she said. âNobody has seen him since lunch.â
âHe wasnât playing babies with us!â Zoë cried. âHe said he would!â
âHe didnât,â Jasper said.
âHe did, too!â
Jasper went over to the Book Nook and pulled all the pillows away. Ori sat up blinking. âYou didnât want to play babies, did you?â Jasper asked.
Ms. Tosh put a hand over her heart. She said, âOh, Jasper, you really are a
