Chapter 6
RENEE
I looked up the second my sister stepped through the door. âAbout time. Girl, I thought you were going to miss the plane.â
Lisa gave Kayla a quick hug, then took a seat on the bench beside her. âPuhleeze. You know Michael had to get him a piece before he would let me out the bed this morning.â
âI know that right,â I mumbled more to myself than anyone else. Vinceâs performance had been outstanding. He rocked my world until the wee hours of the morning, then carried me out onto the balcony, where he fucked me some more. Iâm certain I saw that nosy-ass Mrs. Byrd next door peeking out her window. Shit, I didnât care. If she got her rocks off in the process, Iâm glad to have been of service.
âWhereâs Nadine?â Lisa asked as she reached for a menu.
I rolled my eyes and glanced over at Kayla, who dropped her head with laughter.
I sucked my teeth. âGirl, Iâm not going to even go there. Letâs just say Nadine had better have that birth certificate or she is going to be one sad-ass puppy.â
My sisterâs eyes grew wide. âShe better. Sheâs my roommate and Iâll be damned if I am going to pay for a room by myself.â
âI hadnât thought about that,â I mumbled as I studied her face. Before last week, I hadnât seen Lisa since my kids and I visited her and Michael during spring break. One thing I noticed, she looked more tired than usual. Dark circles shadowed her chestnut eyes. I think she has been working too many hours, but the other day, when I asked her, she said it was nothing to worry about.
She and I looked like sisters except that Lisa is the color of dark toast and a few pounds heavier than me. She wears her hair cut so low, she almost resembles India.Arie. The first time I saw her new hairstyle, I freaked out. I thought she looked like a bald-headed boy and asked her what the hell she was thinking. Lisa said she was tired of long hair and wanted to try something different. After a while the look grew on me. Not everyone has the right-shaped head to shave their head. My sister, however, does. Unlike this dude I used to date. I donât know why every brotha wants to look like Michael Jordan. This cat had so many dents in his dome you would have sworn someone had beat him upside his head with a baseball bat.
Our waitress arrived with my coffee and Lisa also asked for a cup, then glanced down at her watch. âWhat time is Nadine supposed to be here?â
Kayla simply shrugged her shoulders. I, on the other hand, always have something to say.
âGirl, I donât know why you even invited that crazy-ass girl. Sheâs gonna miss the plane.â
Lisa rolled her eyes. âHooker, thatâs your friend, too. Donât even try and play.â
Kayla chuckled.
âWhatever,â I mumbled against the rim of my coffee cup.
My sister hates for anybody to talk about Nadine. She is always defending her. I donât know if Lisa has noticed, but Nadine is grown and no longer needs my sister to fight her battles. I remember in high school, whenever someone was ready to beat that midget down for running her damn mouth, Lisa was always there telling them they had to get through her first. They also knew if they messed with my sister then they had to deal with me. Shiit , you better ask somebody. I may be three years younger, but this sistah ainât no joke.
âHere she comes now,â Kayla said as the waitress returned to fill Lisaâs mug.
I turned in the direction of Kaylaâs gaze to find Nadine getting out of an airport shuttle. âWhat the hell she got on?â I asked my sister.
Lisa shrugged and reached for her coffee. âYou know Nadine only has clothes for work and church.â
âSo which is that?â She had on a long winter-white dress that buttoned down the front with long sheer sleeves.
Lisa gave me a long hard stare.
