watched her from the doorway of his office, concern lining his face as his gaze tracked her.
“Isabelle?” Cree finally called to her from his position in the doorway. “Are you okay?”
She spun at his voice, her hand flying to her chest. “You scared me.”
Cree smiled and made his way to the sofa near the window she was pacing in front of. “Not my intention. Are you all right?”
She nodded, but there was no fooling Cree. He patted the seat next to him with a knowing look. Izzy sighed but came and sat next to him.
    “Talk to me.”
“We have to save him. He doesn’t deserve any of this.”
“Not from our perspective, but from his brothers’, I would guess this feels like a very fitting punishment.”
“Did you see it coming?” she asked. She shared his gift and still she hadn’t seen any of this shit coming.
Cree shook his head. “To be honest, I don’t see much anymore. Flashes of things that I can’t place in our timeline.”
She furrowed her brows. “You mean you don’t know when any of it will happen?”
“I don’t, and most of it makes little sense. I see Rowan… a lot.” Cree looked away from her, but Izzy could hear the grief in his voice. “I see us together again, but she’s different… I don’t know what it means.”
Izzy nodded. “Do you think they are really visions?”
“I think they may be glimpses of our next life, but that’s not how my gift works.”
Silence fell as they drifted into their own thoughts. The reflective moment hung between them as they both contemplated what the visions could mean for Cree’s future. Izzy wished she could find the words that would soothe what remained damaged within him. Still seeking for something to say, the calm in the room was broken by the brothers. Lothar, Kale, Uriah, and Bain entered the room with Samira and Holly in tow.
“Are they settled into Evan’s compound?” Cree asked, lifting his gaze.
Uriah gracefully settled into the seat across from the sofa. “Yes. Marie was a little uneasy with the thought of being surrounded by vampires.”
“She seemed better by the time we left,” Holly added.
    Izzy smiled. “Thank you.”
    “For what?” Holly asked.
“For finding somewhere safe for my baby sister.”
Holly smiled and shrugged. “It’s what we do for family. So, now let’s talk about the plan for rescuing Makyle.”
“They moved him.” Samira spoke from the corner of the room.
All eyes landed on her, making her feel uneasy in their presence.
“What do you mean they moved him?” Izzy questioned.
“I believe they are moving him through the different levels of their domain in the Underworld. It seems like he spends a few days in each level. Today, I was pulled to him… it was different from before. I was there; I talked to him.”
“Wait, he talked to you?” Uriah asked.
“Well, he didn’t believe I was really there. The important thing is that he is in a different part of the Underworld than he was yesterday, which is good. It means you have a few days to get to him, and I actually have an idea of where you need to go. I don’t know a ton about his domain, but I know that he is on the shores of Phlegethon River.”
Bain grunted, and Kale cursed under his breath. “The Phlegethon stretches for miles throughout the Underworld.”
Izzy shook her head. “I’ve never heard of this river.”
Kale smirked at her. “Let me guess—the only river of the Underworld you are familiar with is Styx?”
”Maybe,” Izzy quipped. What did he expect? Most of what she knew of the Underworld came from Greek Mythology studies in the sixth grade… it hadn’t been necessary for her career path.
“Well, the Phlegethon is a river of fire and one of the largest in the Underworld.”
“Figures you’d know all about it.” Izzy’s mouth quirked, as she teasingly rolled her eyes. “So, how do we pinpoint where he is?”
Samira blew out a deep breath. “How many forests reside along the
