get back,” he said curtly, as he picked up the black box from the table.

I just sat and stared at him, trying to comprehend what had just happened.  Cold, black eyes stared back at me.  Instinct told me that now wasn’t the right time to ask him about it.  I picked up my purse and followed him back through the restaurant to his car.  He drove like a bat out of hell and my fingers were soon stiff from gripping the leather seat.

Chapter 3

We didn’t speak a word to each other all the way back to the Orion Building.  I just couldn’t figure out what had happened.  I knew he was angry but not why.  Was he angry at me?  Himself?  It made no sense.

He parked the car and strode off towards the elevator, not waiting for me.  I was so glad that I had no appointments for the rest of the day; I was going to go home and begin preparing Angel’s favorite meal.  As I walked towards the elevator, I studied Lucas from behind.  You could see the tension in his shoulders; in fact all of him was tense.  He stood like a tall granite statue.

As I reached him, he inserted his key into the hole in the wall.  The doors opened immediately and I followed him in.  I didn’t want us to part like this so I drew a deep breath and said, “Lucas, if I have upset or offended you, I am very sorry.”

I felt him turn away from me and I felt like I’d been slapped.  He moved again and I felt the elevator stop.  Oh great, the elevator’s stuck; now I’m stuck in close proximity to someone who can’t bear to be near me.

I nearly jumped out of my skin when I was pulled back against a warm, hard body.  Arms encircled me from behind and held me tightly.  I could feel his breath on my neck but what really drew my attention was the hammering of his heart that against my back.  I realized that I was holding my breath and that every nerve was on edge.  I breathed out slowly and tried to force my muscles to relax.

When he spoke, I felt every word reverberate from his ribcage into mine.  “Issy, you have nothing to apologize for.  I am the one who should be sorry.   I have ruined the precious time that we have had together.”

I knew he was right but what struck me was how he didn’t actually apologize.  He’d said that he should be sorry – not that he was sorry.  What did that mean?  That he knew he was being a jerk but that he wasn’t sorry?  I didn’t know why he was angry either … or why his heart was still pounding in his chest.  I decided that it was time for some answers.

“Lucas, what happened back there?  I feel that you are angry with me but I don’t know what I’ve done.”

I felt him almost sag into me as he exhaled in a rush, his arms pulling me even closer.  “Oh Issy, I’m not angry with you – why on earth would I be angry with you?”

“I thought it might be because I had worked out that you’d gone through the information of my lease to find my name.  Or, perhaps you thought that I was being ungrateful after you’d gone to so much trouble to leave me those beautiful flowers.  To be honest Lucas, I don’t know what to think.  One minute you are relaxed and seemingly enjoying lunch and the next you are snapping your glass in half and storming back here.  I’ve obviously missed something.”

“I’m sorry.  I’m so used to only thinking of myself.  I have behaved appallingly towards you.  Please Issy, say you’ll forgive me.”

Ah, so it is due to lack of social skills.  Still not sure why he got so angry but seeing as he has apologised …

“There’s no harm done so nothing to forgive.  You know, you can talk to me if something’s on your mind.  I might be able to help.”

I felt, as well as heard, a low growl.  “Something is definitely on my mind.  Help all you want.”

I squealed as he twirled me around without warning and then pressed me up against the wall with the length of
