smile on his face and shook his head at his
nephew.
“I just want to have a quick chat to
Frasier over here.”
Before she could stop him he sauntered
over to Frasier and pretty soon they were chatting animatedly.  Frasier kept
glancing at her and she became more agitated by the minute.
If anyone could confirm whether or not
there was someone in her life, it was Frasier.  They have been friends since
high school.  The others on the team would not know.  She kept her personal
life apart from work and nobody knew anything about her life outside of work.
She sighed in relief when they climbed
on the speedboat and disappeared on the horizon.  Frasier sauntered closer and
watched the boat as it became a spot in the distance.
“So, my friend.  Why is the famous
writer so interested in your love life?”
    “What did you tell him?”
He shrugged.  “The same as probably
the rest of the bunch.  Don’t know anything about your personal life, that sort
of thing.  He might have bought it from the others, but somehow I have a
feeling he did not believe me.”
Mackenzie sighed and sank down on a
large coil of rope.
“What’s going on, Mack?  Do you want
to talk about it?”
    “I’ve done something extremely stupid
and irresponsible.”
    “You?  Irresponsible?  Not possible.
Do tell.”
    “I’m … pregnant.”
He took a deep breath and looked at
her with shock.
    “Is it his?”
She nodded and groaned.  She dropped
her head on her drawn up knees.
“When did this happen?  Is that why
you refused at first to head up this research?”
“Not because I was pregnant.  I did
not know then, but because of … oh lord Frasier.  What am I going to do?”
“I assume he knows about the baby?”  She
nodded again.  “I also assume that you denied it is his, hence all the
questions?”
“Yes.  This is such a mess.”
“Why?  Why don’t you want him to
know?”
“He is nothing but a gigolo, Frasier.
He flirts and sleeps with every woman that comes across his path.  It’s in his
nature.”
“That does not mean he doesn’t want
the baby.”
“Oh, I know that.  He made that very
clear! I am not prepared to have my child exposed to a man such as that.  He
has no morals!”
“You of all people know not to believe
everything you read in the papers, even less in the tabloids.  You better think
about this very deeply, Mack.  He does not seem to be the kind of man to be
taken for a fool. Be careful not to overplay your hand.  Someone as well known
and as rich as he, is also powerful and could very easily take your child away
from you.”

Chapter Four
    Billy
arrived promptly at five and assisted her back on the boat.  She sat down and
leaned her head against the back of the seat.   She was tired.  It was a long
hot day and all she wanted to do was to take a long bubble bath.
    “Are you okay, Mack?”
“I’m fine.  Just tired.  We did quite
a number of dives today and with the heat … I feel a little drained.”
Billy did not respond and prepared
himself for her anger when he sped passed the cottage she has been staying at.
    “Where are you going?”
    “Straight to dinner.”
“It is too early and I want to take a
bath!”
“Lots of bathrooms at the house you
could use.”
    “What about clean clothes?”
“I’m sure we will be able to find you
something.”
Mackenzie glared at him, but he
ignored her and all too soon, docked the boat at the main jetty.   Billy helped
her into the beach buggy and she snapped at him.
“Stop that!  I am not an invalid!”
He chuckled and got behind the
wheel.    Chase stood waiting for them in front of the house when they arrived
and wouldn’t you know it … shirtless!  She stomped in his direction, her eyes
shooting daggers at him.
    “This is extremely inconsiderate to
say the least. I am tired and in desperate need of a bath!”
Chase looked at Billy who just shrugged.
“I was not prepared to be at the brunt
of her
