act or what heâll want. Iâm not about to compromise on what I think is best for the baby.â
âIf you feel that way, you know you may end up being lonely and find life difficult. You should at least think about your options before you lock up your heart. Marriage isnât about losing control. Look at me. Iâm so in love with Connorâmarriage is wonderful.â
âAnd thatâs the way I want my marriage to beâtwo people wildly in love,â Rose argued, still hurting over her shattered dreams. âI want a love matchânot a couple who weds because they feel obligated. The statistics are scary enough when one out of two marriages ends in divorce. The statistics are higher if the marriage occurs because of a child.â
âI think youâre looking at the worst-case scenarios,â Nita said.
âRight now, marriage is absolutely out of the question for all those reasons. But most of all because it means losing my control to someone I donât know well enough. I told youâno, thanks.â
âWhatever you choose to do, we love you and weâll love your baby. You know that,â Nita said, and Rose had never felt such a strong bond with her sister.
âThank you. I knew I could count on you to support me in this,â Rose said and realized that, in spite of sibling rivalries, she could always bank on Nita when a crisis threatened.
âOf course Iâll support you,â Nita exclaimed. âSo will Daddy and Jane.â She placed her hands on her hips. âHow far along are you?â
âFive months,â Rose replied.
âFive! You donât look pregnant at all.â
âMy waist is starting to get biggerâonly a little.â She patted her middle. âThe father has a right to know and eventually Iâll inform him, but at the moment Iâm getting used to all this myself.â
âDo you know what youâre having?â
âA girl,â Rose said and smiled. âMore females in this family.â
âThatâs wonderful!â
Rose frowned. âNita, I donât want to tell Daddy. Jane will be easier, but Daddy is going to be unhappy. This isnât what heâd want for me.â
âYou have to tell him.â
âI dread it. You know Daddy. Heâll want to go after the man responsible with a shotgun. And heâs distressed already. I know the farm canât take many more disasters. It has to be hurting financially. It is, isnât it?â
Nita inhaled deeply and looked beyond Rose before her gaze swung back to her sister. âIt was, but Connor keeps telling me to stop stewing over income. Heâs invested in the horse farm to bring it back up to speed, so now heâs part owner and we have his financial backing.â
âThank goodness! Thatâs one concern off my mind.â
âI donât want Daddy to fret either and I donât want him to try to do something he shouldnât or, worse, try to get around on his leg too soon,â Nita said. âA baby is different from worrying about the farmâs finances or the catastrophes that have been happening. After the first shock, heâll be happy. You know heâs going to adore a grandchild.â
âI donât know that.â
âHe will, and I think you should tell him now.â
Rose gazed down the drive, remembering watching Tom leave. She knew what she had to do and it had been a relief to tell Nita her secret. âI guess I will. Itâs not going to get any easier.â
âWhatâs not going to get any easier?â Will asked as he hobbled onto the porch, swinging his crutches with each step. âI thought Iâd sit out here. I get tired of being cooped up in the house, but maybe Iâm interrupting something,â he said. âI can come back later.â
âNot at all,â Rose said. She took a deep breath and balled her fists.
âCome
