have to do with anything?â Mel asked.
Sara broke away from her musings. âNo, all is not well. I think Iâm falling in love with Reese too. This is my brother-in-law weâre talking about. Isnât that sick? I truly hate my mother for choosing to be with two men and now I want the exact same thing. I put Cade through hell. I made him miserable until he swore he wouldnât push me into a threesome and now itâs what I want.â
âJust tell him what you told me,â Mel said softly. âIâm sure heâll understand.â
âHeâs been through so much these past few weeks. I know I should be honest with him, but Iâm too nervous. Things were a lot simpler before Cade fell. Now Reese is constantly around helping out. I adore him, but every time I see him I want to jump his bones. I want both men.â She stood up and paced the small office. âI canât go on this way. Iâm downright bitchy to Reese, and Cade is always asking whatâs wrong. I keep sidestepping the issue. Heâs been patient with me so far, but I know itâs not going to last for long.â She sat back down. âItâs been twenty-one years since my mom left. Cade suggested that I ask Aunt Helen if she knows where mom is and find out firsthand why she left instead of listening to all of the gossip.â
âSounds like good advice to me. Did you ask your aunt?â
âYeah. She claims she doesnât know, but Cadeâs convinced sheâs lying. Cade wouldnât have a problem finding my mom if I asked him to. Itâd just be quicker if Aunt Helen told me.â
âCadeâs right,â Mel replied. âSometimes itâs best to listen to the other side of the story, although I canât imagine a mother wanting to abandon her child.â Mel blew out a breath. âAs for you, you need to stop trying so hard to please everyone else and focus on doing what you want to do. Talk to Cade about your feelings for Reese.â She paused for a moment. âWould this be a one-time thing?â
Sara sighed. âThatâs just it. I donât really know. I want to be with both of them, but for more than a day.â Her cheeks flushed and she covered her face with her hands. âMy aunt would kill me if she found out. She wasnât happy at all when I didnât listen to her advice and married Cade. She said Iâd become his and Reeseâs plaything before the year was out and then theyâd go sniffing for someone else because it was in their nature. She was that way with any boy who came around the house while I was growing up. Itâs almost as if she didnât want me to be happy. Dad never approved of any of the guys I dated, but what father believes any man is perfect for his little girl?â
Melanie grabbed Saraâs hands and pulled them away from her face. âStop it. Now, you listen to me. Your aunt may have different beliefs than you, but that doesnât mean you have to follow her rule. I didnât know your dad so I canât comment on whether he was being too overprotective or not, but if youâre asking for my honest opinion, your aunt seems to be very controlling toward you. She calls here a lot to see if youâre at work. The girls also told me that if youâre not behind the counter when she comes in she insists that they tell her where you are.â
Saraâs eyes widened with shock. âI didnât realize that. They should have mentioned something. Iâm so sorry, Mel.â
Mel waved away the apology. âThatâs okay. Weâre all like family here. If she gets too annoying Iâll have to tell her only to call if thereâs an emergency. But thatâs not the issue right now. Your happiness is. Lifeâs too short to be afraid to go after what you want. Believe me, I know. I allowed Mike to keep me down by crawling into a shell. He constantly told me that it
