dark face and gently pushed down her thick bottom lip. She leaned forward and began to kiss him, until a strange tickle on her arm made her pull away. “What the heck is that?” she said.
She looked down and saw a black and white striped spider with a body as big as a date, crawling on her forearm. She screamed and batted it away from her, then bolted to her feet and ran a little distance off, frantically looking around her to check there weren’t any more.
“Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, oh my goodness.”
Theo got up and walked toward her. “My God, that was a big one.”
“You’re telling me,” she said, rubbing her hands all over her arms and body to lose any other threatening arachnids. “There’s not any on me is there?”
Theo walked around her and checked her over. “No, baby, you’re safe.”
Her heart melted whenever he called her baby. She didn’t think she would ever get tired of hearing it.
She leaned against his chest and breathed out, feeling safer than she ever had before.
“Who’s there?” an aggressive male voice called out suddenly.
Angelique looked up at Theo, panicked, then around them, but there was no one there. The voice must have come from behind the trees.
“You know who that is?” he whispered.
She shook her head, her heart racing in her chest.
    “Hello?” Theo called out.
“Who’s there?” the voice called out, even more hostile this time.
“We’re buying this piece of land,” said Theo. “We’re just here to look at it.”
The sound of bush being cut was deafening as they waited for someone to emerge. Eventually a man stepped out toward them, a cutlass in his hand. Two others followed, both armed with cutlasses. Ever since she was little, Angelique knew that tropical farmers carried cutlasses, it was totally normal, but the look in the eyes of these men made shivers creep up her spine.
“Like hell you’re buying this piece of land,” the first man said. He swung his cutlass up and raised the flat part on his shoulder.
“We have a realtor who’s putting it all together for us,” said Theo. “Kalani Hale. You know him?”
“No,” the man said. He swaggered toward them, his eyes narrowed. “I don’t know anyone by that name.”
He swung his cutlass out from his shoulder and sliced a thick vine clean in half with a metallic swoosh. It fell to the ground.
