do that, Peter?â Kris asked.
âIâm thinking about it,â he said with a grin.
âNo better man.â
âWish your people had advertising or a public-service radio channel. Get word about.â
Zainal grinned. âActually, a few rumors wouldnât be hard to start.â
âThatâs what we need. How?â
âBy the very people we want to trade with us.â
âThe merchants?â
âThey tend to trade gossip, too,â Zainal said with a cunning smile. âAnd spread news.â
âAnd?â Peter prompted him.
âAnd we can prime them, as it were.â
âSo theyâll be lusting after our goods,â Peter said, rubbing his hands in anticipation.
âWe can hope,â Zainal remarked, slightly skeptical.
âIf we put out the right lures, theyâll come. Especially if they are becoming consumer-oriented.â
âWe could also bring Botanical specialties,â Kris said. âLike rock squats. Remember how our refugees liked them?â
âNo, but Iâll take your word for it,â Zainal said with a grin, as he had been absent from Botany during the period when the colony had been a sanctuary for the families of Emassi who wanted them safe prior to the attack on the dread Eosi leaders.
âEven managed to get the boys to hunt with us,â Peter said, amused by the recollection.
âWell, we should arrange a hunting party, then.â
âAnd perhaps gather some of the tubers. I suspect that food is in short supply on Earth. Invasions do wreak havoc on crops.â
âSo, what needs to be done first?â Dorothy asked just as Peter reached the printer that had several sheets in its tray.
âGot a list here of Catteni-speakers who are away,â he said and handed it to Zainal.
âAnd I have the list of possible barter goods,â Krissaid, pointing to her scribbled note listing what Mike Miller had told her.
âWe do have a dentist,â Jerry Short said, stopping in the doorway. âName of Eric Sachs. Used to practice in New York. Heâs been on call at the hospital but doesnât have much equipment here. Iâve asked him to join us as soon as he can.â
âThanks, Jerry.â Zainal made a check on his own notes and then paused. âHow do you spell âdentistâ?â he asked.
Everyone told him at once but he got the word down on his pad, grinning as he wrote. âThanks. I think these âdentistsâ will be very useful. And we can get the equipment. What is generally needed?â
âIâve never needed much dentistry except to have my wisdom teeth pulled,â Kris said, looking around.
âWell, I haveâyou know the Colgate-bright smile,â Peter said and exposed his white, even teeth. âA good smile is essential in public relations. However, to preserve the image I wanted to present, I did get my front teethââhe tapped themââcapped as a business expense. Good teeth are a lifelong investment.â
âWhat about gold ones?â Kris asked.
âThatâs not part of my culture,â he said. âBut a sign of importance or affluence in others. In present context, if it works, itâd be wonderful.â He paused, raising his hand for silence. âTo be Johnny-on-the-spot, we can also possibly provide the essential professional.â
âEssential professional?â Zainal was totally confused.
âWe bring our resident dentist with usâand he makes crowns on the spot?â Kris asked. Peterâs wide smile answered her. âBut a dentist needs a lot of equipment and supplies we donât have.â
âArenât we planning a trip to Earth anyway? We can pick up what we need, and sell the Catteni those gold teeth theyâre so fond of.â
Kris snapped her fingers. âJust like that!â
âWhy not? Whoâd be stealing dental
