donât have two hundred years to wait around for experimental results.â
They stood in silence at the top of the hill they had just climbed, breathing heavily. They looked around in silence. They both spun slowly in circles.
âIâd swear weâve been here before,â Olivia said.
âI thought weâd be back at our campsite by now,â Zack said.
âI have a new hypothesis,â Olivia said, plucking petals from the bouquet.
âMe, too. Weâre totally lost.â
âYup, that was my hypothesis. Weâve been going in circles, havenât we?â
âI donât think we even need to prove it with an experiment.â
Just then a strange animal noise from an uncomfortably nearby distance filled the air. It wasnât exactly a howl, but it wasnât a grunt or a growl or a bark either.
Olivia took a quick step closer to Zack. âWhat was that?â
It was the same sound they had heard coming from the woods when they had arrived at their campsite. Zack and Olivia turned in the direction the noise had come from.
âItâs Nasty Ned,â Zack whispered.
âItâs that werewolf,â Olivia said quietly. âItâs been nice knowing you, McGee.â
They were silent for a full minute and didnât hear another noise.
âWeâre lost in the woods and surrounded by hungry werewolves,â Zack finally whispered. âAnd my dad canât figure out why I donât like camping.â
Olivia dropped the tiny bouquet of flowers and grabbed Zack firmly by the shoulders. âI know you said you canât make long-distance calls with Amp using your brain, but you need to try. Try really hard. We need Ampâs help and we need it now.â
âThe fact that weâre relying on my brain worries me more than that hungry monster sound we just heard,â Zack said.
âShut up and make the call,â Olivia said, âbefore you become a Zackburger.â
Loud Silence
âW hatâs wrong?â
Zack opened his eyes. âWhat?â
âDo you have to go to the bathroom or something?â
âNo! Why?â
Olivia shrugged. âI donât know. It looked like you were having some kind of an episode.â
âAn episode?â
âYeah. Your face was all scrunched up, and youâre kinda . . . squatting a little bit.â
Zack bugged out his eyes. âHave you ever tried to shout silently? Using only your mind? Itâs not easy.â
âListen, if you need to go the bathroom, I canââ
âAll this mental yelling is melting my brain.âHe shook his head. âIâm not hearing anything from Amp.â
Olivia looked around at the surrounding woods. âWhat if weâre lost overnight?â
âI have two flashlights,â Zack said.
âOh, thank goodness.â
âBut not with me. One is in the tent, which is probably burned to a crisp by now. And the other one was in the car, which was taken for a joyride by a gang of hungry bears.â
âA sleuth of hungry bears.â
âWhatever.â
âWell, thanks for telling me about the flashlights you donât have. Really helpful,â Olivia said, punching Zack too hard in the arm.
Zack rubbed his arm and looked back down the hill they had climbed earlier. âMaybe we should justââ Zack stopped and held up both hands. âWait. I just heard something.â
âYou did?â Olivia said, her eyes darting around. âBears?â
âNo, in my head. I just heardââ
Olivia clapped excitedly. âIs it Amp? I donât hear anything. What did he say? Did he soundââ
Zack shushed Olivia again. Zack thought, âAMP! IS THAT YOU? WHERE ARE YOU, YOU ERDIAN PIPSQUEAK?â
âZack?â a faint voice said in his head.
âI can hear him,â Zack said to Olivia.
âMake some noise,â Amp echoed in Zackâs head.
